  2. SERIOUSLY! Now that I’m canning and buying new jars, I’m always shocked at thrift store prices.

I’ve been noticing this on fb marketplace as well. Not this bad, but people are selling their used jars (no rings or lids) for the same if not more than the price of new jars (with new rings and lids).

At my local Goodwill jars are 4 for a $1 and at Value Village they are $0.50 each. I’m in Canada

It is an old Hazel Atlas jar; the price is insane of course.

My local grocery store is $11.99 for a dozen regular mouth quarts with rings and flats. People around here on Marketplace want to sell them $3 each for just the jars.

I’m in Ontario and they’re like $2 a piece at every thrift shop I see them in. For pint and half pint jars! Quarts are like $4.

Sometimes I think it’s just ignorance, like the pricing people don’t realize that I can buy a case of brand new jars for $12-14 for 12. So pricing one jar at anything more than $1 isn’t a deal.

You can always talk to whoever is in charge and point that out – but many times it won’t get you anywhere.

On FB, I feel like most people are selling Granny’s old jars they inherited, so they really don’t know what the cost should be. They think canners will buy anything at any price because of the impending zombie apocalypse or something.

Also, people remember the jar shortage during COVID but have since forgotten that we’re not still having those supply issues so no, I’m not paying $2 or more for a jar. $1/jar or less. And while $1 isn’t necessarily a good deal, it’s still nice to pick up a couple jars here when I happen to find them.
