We get turkey carcasses from a local charity after they cook thanksgiving dinner for those in need. This year we got about a dozen. We cook them down in two slow cookers for about 12 hours each. We then remove the meat/bones and separate them. The meat gets vac sealed and frozen. The broth is bagged as well (we will have around a gallon of concentrated broth). I can easily get several dozen turkey based meals from this (turkey ala king, turkey soup, turkey sandwiches etc) out of this free source of food!

This is when I wish I had space for an extra freezer. So many turkey deals today

Huh. So this charity, supposed to feed an entire homeless population in your city, only uses part of the birds and gives everything else to the non-homeless? Instead of doing exactly what you yourself are doing with these “leftovers”, to stretch the budget and provide more meals for the people who actually need the meal RIGHT NOW, lest they and their own children starve?

Your post does not inspire confidence in humanity or the holidays right now. Like it’s awesome that you got all this free meat, but the homeless shelter could have done the same thing you’re doing and offered more meals to those In even more dire straights than yourself.

Don’t get me wrong. That’s a damn excellent score. I’m just questioning the charity that seemingly wastes multiple pounds of usable food yearly. I’m guessing they would throw all that out if y’all didn’t ask for it.

    I find that distressing.
