I know y’all gonna kill be but this is a 20 dollar plate at PokeJoes. Yeah, it’s not one of the popular places but it still hits with no lines and no wait.

I feel like this is a solid meal.

Dinner anywhere is $20+ now, that’s as competitively priced as any BBQ place. They don’t win any awards but I agree it gets the job done and there’s never a problem getting a quick plate. I just try to get there before the church crowd on Sundays, that’s the busiest time I’ve ever seen. Probably the most common catered BBQ I’ve seen served at events, too.

It’s not that bad of a price. That would be 2 meals for me. I love their toast!

I agree with you that the 2 meat plate is a nice meal. FYI HEB True TX BBQ has a similar plate for $15.49 with ribs’ costing extra.

A PokeJoe’s chopped brisket or sausage sandwich with a side of fried okra has been one of my favorite lunches since they were still on West 5th

I actually enjoy PokeJoes alot. Their food is solid and it’s usually never packed.

The meat looks fine but the sides don’t look very good in the pic. Mac and cheese looks like from powder and fries look soggy.

I like Pok-e-Jo’s. It’s a perfectly good neighborhood BBQ place without the big production of going to a fancy BBQ place.

Also, the camera you took that with is looking out for your health. Its color balance has turned mac and cheese into a green vegetable for you.

meat looks too dry i feel 😬 esp for 20

We always use pokejos for holiday meals in some way. Primarily because the sausage gravy is AMAZING

IMO, Pok-e-Jo’s has the best sausage of any Texas BBQ, and the baked potato casserole is so unbelievably great.

I know Pokejo’s isn’t the best but I don’t live in Austin anymore and would absolutely love to find a place close to me that served this for $20. It’s a cheap price and high quality compared to anything in the area I live in now.

Used to work right down the hill from there back when Pinthouse was Chili’s and The Park was Fuddruckers. Good, reliable lunch break BBQ.

Even better deal if you sign up for rewards at their Hancock location.

Not that I would ever go to a BBQ to eat healthy, but I appreciate their broccoli salad. Nice to have legit vegetables as a side occasionally. That being said, any other BBQ places have decent vegetable sides? Stiles cucumber salad isnt bad.

My office has Poke-E-Jo’s in the regular rotation for lunch catering. They do a consistently solid work lunch.

Pokejoes is great! Their sides are reliably good and their meat is well done. Their pork ribs are my fav in town.

I don’t eat meat but that Mac and cheese looks disgustingly good

  18. Pok-e-Jo’s has a condiment bar with unlimited jalapeños. Can’t beat that.

Man the sides are where it’s at at pokejoes.. so much to choose from .. and the bbq gets the job done. Their habanero mango bbq sauce is pretty darn good too. 👌

Nobody is going to be hearing Daniel Vaughn of Texas Monthly sing the praises of Pok-E-Jo’s BBQ anytime soon, nor will you see three hour long lines of tourists in skinny jeans and ironic t-shirts out the door.

You will, however, see plenty of dirty pickup trucks with tool boxes in the parking lot. Lots of grey haired dudes in grease stained Dickies shirts and baseball caps, and relaxed cops on their lunch break who aren’t in the least worried about what’s been put in their food.

This joint is decidedly not part of the new much-overhyped school of Austin “hipstercue” joints and has been smoking meat unpretentiously and reasonably affordably in Austin for decades.

No, the brisket won’t win James Beard awards, but those in the know don’t usually order that. You can get yourself a fantastic half yard bird, two generous sides and a pile of onions, pickles (their pickle bar sports jalapenos, dill slices, dill soears and bread n butter pickles, BTW), and Texas toast for under $16 for lunch. As smoked meat meals go in Austin these days, that’s a steal.

The fact that they’ve been quietly serving up quality smoked meat for decades without much hype or even much advertising at all is all you need to know about what to expect here.
