Edit: The outcome looks great, i’m sure it tasted great and was fun to do. The popcorn is for the reactions you’ll likely get for soaking the wood chips.
Someone somewhere started a trend of soaking wood so it doesn’t burn up as quickly and would smolder. This ends up giving you some bitter smoke/steam in most cases – you want nice clean smoke and flavor coming from your wood, so you really want dry wood chunks/chips.
