(1) Natural Sea and Snow’s canned clams
(2) The meal
(3) Hubby added mushrooms to the chowder and a grind of black pepper on top
(4) The bite
This is my husband’s clam chowder, so there aren’t a lot of picture of the dish steps as it’s cooking.
He prefers to be left in the kitchen to cook in peace – he doesn’t like being pestered a lot for photos, for questions, etc, when he’s cooking. Everybody cooks differently in the kitchen 😀
He also follows recipes very closely, so if you have the recipe, you know what he did (soooo not like how I cook – ha).
His recipe is from the New York Times – The Best Clam Chowder by Sam Sifton:
The only change he made was to add some fresh dill because he thought it needed some green herb, and he doesn’t love parsley especially (I do).
The chowder was delicious – Snow’s canned clams are top-notch. I couldn’t tell a taste difference between the Snows and the Natural Sea, BUT I could tell a texture difference.
Natural Sea are much chewier and more rubbery. Which is not to say Natural Sea are not also very good clams! They were also sweet and very good in the chowder.
Snow’s clams are not mushy by any means, but they are more tender.
ALSO: Natural Sea clams are $5.99 a can, while Snow’s are $2.18 a can.
Hubby (who was not thinking of reddit when he was cooking since he’s not on it) didn’t notice a visual difference in the clams as he was cooking them, and he didn’t taste then before he dumped them all in.
I definitely noticed a texture difference in the bowl, which I think (but can’t be certain) was the Natural Sea clams.
Therefore, I think I have to grade these brands as follows:
Snow’s Chopped Clams – 10/10 will definitely buy again. These have always been my go-to chopped clams, so I’m comfortable reviewing them in a mixed chowder. I know my Snow’s.
Natural Sea Chopped Clams – grade pending. I’ll buy a can myself and do something with it so I can give a proper review.
That price tho – 😬

Ugh, I used to love clam chowder … I should look up a recipe that doesn’t have non-seafood animal products. This is so delicious looking.

Snow’s clams for the win! The juice can be used for cocktails if you don’t want to use it in the chowder.

These canned clams are solid. They make decent in seafood linguine too.
