I baked a cake ONCE a couple years ago for a friend’s birthday, and ever since then I’ve been asked to make cakes for all my family’s/friend’s birthday 😭 I do it in place of a birthday gift but still it’s so time consuming and I really don’t think my cakes are THAT good, not bad for at home but no where near professional level and I’m pretty self conscious about them.

Anyway, my question is that has anyone else got themselves wrapped up into this situation where they’ve been designated as “a baker” without necessarily signing up for it 🫠 I definitely enjoy it from time to time as a hobby but I don’t think my skill set is anywhere good enough to be designated for birthday cakes each year.

    That cake looks so pro!!!

But yeah I do also sometimes feel like I’m expected to bring the desserts to parties. I try to see it as opportunities for me to practice baking but I don’t think my cakes are half as pretty as yours lol

That’s a terrific looking cake my friend!

I can see why. This is so much better than the cakes they’d be getting otherwise, and it’s a great present. You have a great eye for color and composition, so this has come out looking better than a lot of professional cakes with perfectly smooth frosting.

you could have fooled me! this looks great!

Your work is honestly a lot better and with more attention to detail than a lot of “professional” work I see!

Yes. And my comment when asked was I only make cakes for a select few people because of the time it takes. If others want to be upset about it, that’s a them problem. I limited it to 6 people for several years, and now it’s only 1. Once a hobby becomes a chore, I’m not doing it for me, so I may as well not do it at all.

    This is a cute cake.

You can tell them you only make cakes for a few people because you’re not a professional. “No.” Is a complete sentence.

    I completely understand your cake-based-anxiety!

I can bake a few things in my kitchen under zero pressure and 9 times out of 10 it turns out perfectly… but I can’t handle the pressure of baking a birthday cake 🫣🥳😂

    (Your cake looks wonderful btw!)

I don’t blame them, that cake is adorable!

We are always the hardest on ourselves! Your cake looks great!!! But learn how to say no sometimes if you really want to say no. You have to have boundaries and respect for yourself enough to honor them. I know it’s hard but people will use you as much as you allow them.

Your cake is gorgeous omg. I love it.

ETA: today is my birthday and if I got this I’d have been so thrilled

If you don’t want to do it, don’t. Lol
    It’s cute though

But I would die to have this cake for my birthday.

Gives me good feels just looking at it.

Nah, I see the appeal. What a lovely cake!!

It sure fulfils the “happy” part of Happy Birthday. It’s such a happy looking cake.

It looks great! I’m doing my first stacked cake for a birthday soon (I volunteered but that was before I realized how many ppl/how big a cake I’d need to do lol). So far I can see why you’d be stressed about it. I haven’t even started baking anything yet I’m just obsessively planning, I can’t stop tweaking my plan and waffling on decisions. Can I ask what kind of frosting and fillings you’ve used here?

This reminds me of the max and Ruby cake

I see two different issues here: One being you are self conscious about your cakes, the other being that you don’t want to make cakes anymore. So uh which is it?

I think that cake is so cute and if people are continuing to ask for it your cakes must be better than you’re perceiving them.

I am also basically the “baker” but I enjoy it and now I don’t have to think of birthday presents much haha

I could have posted this same thing! Your cake is beautiful! I also can not get icing smooth to save my life but I think people appreciate the homemade taste.

I’d rather get this cake for my birthday than paying for it for sure. This would be like $120 cake, it would be nearly perfect and maybe would taste fractionally better but would probably not be worth the money in comparison to what they are getting from you.

  24. doombuggy3

That is a very adorable cake! You do have talent

  25. pastelneonmoon

Yes!!!! I used to post cakes or pastries that I’d bake for fun on my social media but then people started asking if I could make them cakes. Usually close friends or family and I’d have a hard time saying no. It turned my hobby into a stressful and time consuming thing. Especially because I have a whole job and baking was just something I’d do when I found time. Most people don’t realize how much time and preparation goes into it. I stopped posting haha.

That’s the classic looking nostalgia cake that I would love to gobble up. It is extremely tasty looking!!!

I’m in the same boat. I manage to make the time work for me by walking in place while I bake so I can get my daily cardio in at the same time.

  28. ladyvibrant

It’s an honor to be held in high regard, OP.

    Your cake looks tasty.

Feel you! Became the “cake person” by accident 😅. It’s fun but overwhelming. Maybe set boundaries or suggest a group cake-making
