Let’s seed start!

It’s officially Pepper planting time in preparation for the spring vegetable garden! I’ve gathered up all of my favorite pepper seeds + some new ones for my biggest pepper garden to date! With over 16 varieties of pepper plants, my pepper garden is sure to be a little spicy, a little interesting and a whole lot of fun! I’m so excited to be growing more sweet pepper varieties this year than ever.

I can’t wait to get my seeds germinated and growing, so I can plant them in my No dig, No till garden beds in March. This year I’m dreaming of an even bigger vegetable garden, but my priority is keeping it organized. I’m so anxiously awaiting the time I can finally harvest my peppers!

I can’t wait to see what our permaculture vegetable garden looks like come Spring!

Our homestead is based out of Florida, we value no dig and no till practices (deep mulching), while incorporating raised beds and permaculture values 💚

Before starting the seed sewing video for the peppers I found that not only Ruby is um she’s not the only egg laying hen anymore I was checking on her nesting box to see if she had laid any eggs we’ve got all of the other chickens laying very exciting stuff I want to

Check on the Tomato Sprouts that we all sprouted together about 10 days ago so it has been really cold well not not cold but it’s been too cold for tomatoes to germinate so this is the longest germination process I think I’ve ever had with tomatoes cuz I’m just keeping

Them outside I’m keeping them underneath the couch so that I can protect them from my chickens because we let them out at night supervised uh so that of course they don’t get attached by any type of hawks or predators and I also don’t want the chickens to

Eat my tomato seeds or Sprouts or anything like that so I’ve been keeping them under the outdoor couch so we do have some Sprouts this is all looking so good they’re a little bit lgy though that’s um not a huge problem yet what you’ll want to do if you have some

Leggy Sprouts is immediately get them access to light whether that is artificial or um your natural light if it’s warm enough outside so I’m going to make sure I put these out into the Sun and these ones should be fixed the other tray also has some Sprouts some of them

Are like brand new Sprouts I’ll zoom in on them as you can see there’s some kind of like newer sprouts and some that are kind of still trying to curl up and make their way out so I have no doubt that by the end of today or tomorrow the rest of

Them should Sprout I’m just going to start putting them in the Sun and making sure I keep them well hydrated let’s get started with the pepper seeds unlike the Tomato video I went ahead and I got all of my pepper varieties that I’m going to be sprouting all ready so that we can

You know expedite the process okay we have our Peppers all laid out and I’m going to do a run through on what I’m growing and why so my mom brought these two different varieties of peppers back from Italy now I don’t have the actual pepper packet

One just says it’s a long one and one says it’s a ball one so we shall see together the next one is the pablano peppers they’re pretty classic most people know about a paano pepper one of my favorites anytime I go out to eat and like go to um like a Mexican restaurant

Or anything like that I’m always getting chili Renos also not only just for that they have so much flavor for different very very different recipes and things like that they’re such like a good Smoky flavor so definitely hoping I can grow a good amount of pabl peppers I’m also

Growing this red Corno D choro pepper now I’ve never grown this particular variety of pepper before it is an Italian sweet grilling pepper so that just sounds fantastic to me okay the Tabasco Peppers now I feel bad about this last year I had like a gigantic

Garden okay by the time it was harvest season and this goes the same for the banana peppers too by the time it was harvest season I had a 3-month-old baby I did not make the best out of my Harvest I would say and like utilize the these plants to the best of their

Ability this year I would love to have more time devoted to uh actually preserving and canning all of our Peppers specifically the banana pepper and I definitely want to make some hot sauce with the Tabasco pepper next I have these shashito Peppers H I love these they are so freaking good just

Simple like just roasting them make sure they have a little bit of char on them with some salt and oil on them and also what I want to use shashito peppers for is to dry them and like dehydrate them and then use them in and grind them up

Use them in my dry storage Pantry so I would love to start making a more interesting dry storage Pantry then just like your classic like garlic powder and onion powder and things like that next I’ve got the pepperi peppers now these are the peppers that you would see like

In your Papa John’s pizza box or uh any type of like Pizza that would include a pepper typically this is where you would find it so I would love to grow these and have a big stash of canned pepperi Peppers now these are considered to be a

Sweet pepper however they do have a Teensy bit of spice I have experiened we’ve got the serrano peppers now one pepper plant is going to be a lot of Sano Peppers one time I grew I think like two or three serrano pepper plants at one time and let me tell you it’s a

Lot a lot of peppers I’m growing them with the intent to make hot sauces so each one of these peppers have like a different type of reason why I want to grow them next I’ve got the Tam jalapeno pepper so this is just like it’s original jalapeno counterpart apparently

I’ve never grown this never eaten it however it is supposed to have a mild flavor or a mild heat index so we’ll see I will be the judge of that I’m sure that some of them will still be a little bit spicy but I love adding jalapeno peppers to like guacamole and things

Like that just for the flavor and I have a 3-year-old who loves guacamole but also doesn’t like spicy stuff imagine that so I would be really interested to see if this wasn’t spicy to where I could incorporate it into more meals I grew this last year and I’m just going

To I’m just going to be honest I didn’t think that it was going to work I mean some of these different really interesting varieties I feel like they’re not real and then this actually was real it was a purple bell pepper it was really great now I have grown the AI

Pepper before I’m not sure if I’m saying this correctly but that’s how I’m going to say it to the best of my ability so this originates in Peru it’s a delightful teeny tiny little pepper it’s smaller than a pee and the actual pepper plant did produce a lot it didn’t it

Wasn’t crazy it wasn’t like to a point where I didn’t know what to do with them um these would make the ideal garnish if you’re doing like some type of really cool like spicy pizza or roasting them putting them on top of tacos they are

Spicy I will say it’s not like I’m just going to eat a few peppers like they are definitely spicy next I’m growing the Bueno malacha Peppers again now I just had a really fun time growing these they the picture like if you could see the picture right here they look just like

That they’re absolutely beautiful I will say that they taste better if you allow them to mature to the red shade so when they’re purple they definitely still have um quite a bite to them I don’t think that all the sugars have fully matured at that point and I also have

The Datil pepper this I did grow successfully last year and again I it was a very small plant it was in a really small pot so all of the uh the plant itself was just like more stunted and I didn’t even I didn’t even eat them

I’m just going to be honest it was such a huge Garden I had so many Like Crazy Life Changes going on that I was like I I just didn’t try them I’m just going to be honest so we’ve got the cubel pepper which is a classic pepper it’s an

Italian frying pepper and it’s awesome for different like soups salads grilling this year I’m really excited to have a bigger variety of sweet peppers I feel like that’s kind of what I have been diving into getting more varieties of sweet peppers than the spicy ones so we’ve got the large

Jalapeno here these are just seeds that I had saved so I’m going to grow one probably just one jalapeno plant and see if it’s any different from the Tam jalapeno I have not opened a single pack of peppers I have not touched a pepper seed yet but just touching the outside

Of any of those pepp pepper packs somehow I touched like the inside of my eyes my eyes are like all spicy and burning so be careful so this is just like a little idea for some of you who might be thinking gosh these like little vegetable Place markers are expensive I

Always do popsicle sticks because they are biodegradable make sure you’re getting food grade ones I will link the ones that I have purchased below if you are interested I’m always growing so many different varieties and it’s changing so much every year that I can’t like keep up with tracking down those

Place markers so I’d like to just you know get a new one every year so I will Mark the particular popsicle stick and I will place it on top of my seed pack and then just move on and keep stacking and stacking so that uh when it’s time to

Actually put the seeds in there then everything’s like kind of already in place that is the system that I like to work with I just counted and guess guess in the comments round of guesses how many varieties of peppers I am growing 16 that’s crazy but it’s

Super exciting too I’ve never grown 16 different varieties of peppers at one time maybe like five at one time so that’s going to be so awesome I think we’re going to be like just flooded with peppers so I’ve got my soil blocker here my soil blocks here I don’t know if you

Can see I’ve already made them so if you’re not familiar with soil blocks which I wasn’t familiar with them until this year until recently I’ve been gardening for a while so if you’re not familiar with them they’re individual blocks of soil that house one little

Seed so I think it’s so much easier and what really motivated me to do soil blocks was just to reduce on plastic it’s a more sustainable option long term and it’s healthier for the actual starts now I’m starting to figure out that it is so much easier than messing around

With all those little plastic containers that are so finicking can break and everything so I’m loving the transition if you’re interested in learning more I will include a video link to the first time I did it with the peppers one thing you will need to know is that they are

Very temperamental to heat to germinating for heat most of the seeds are going to pretty much look like this be about the same size in more realistic growing temperatures it’s going to take 7 to 20 days to germinate a pepper seed you’ll want to make sure that the soil

Temperature is at anywhere from 75° to hotter they really like that 80° sweet spot to guarantee that because this next week is going to be a little bit chilly they’re definitely not going to germinate just on their own accord sitting outside the high I think is like

65 most of the days I have purchased a um seed heat mat and I will definitely include a link to my Amazon storefront if you’re interested I’ve never done the heat mats before and last year a few of you recommended to use a heat mat to germinate the peppers and the tomatoes

And anything like that and you know if you’re in a colder climate too just a Heat mat’s going to be really helpful so I’ve never done it trying some new things I’ve got the large jalapeno here I’m really excited to see how it works out I’m just going to do one of the

Detail Peppers the great thing about the soil Bloss is there’s already about like a/4 in hole in there like when you make the soil block so it makes your life a lot easier because all you have to do at the end is just cover up the little hole one

Thing with the AI Peppers the seeds are so small so I’m going to grow two of these and I’m going to try to close up for you they’re itty bitty tiny little seeds I don’t even know if you can see that I am just feeling like reinvigorated to have all these

Different options growing right now because last year I will say my pepper game it was not strong I did not go crazy with the peppers you know rightfully so cuz I just had a baby I was more focused on the tomatoes last year I am really focused on tomatoes

This year I will say that has not died down at all if anything I’m going harder in the Tomato game this year than last year if I could have like Unlimited homegrown crops that we would use literally every single day it would be tomato products and pepper products so

Any type of canned tomatoes or canned Peppers we would use that literally on a day daily basis next I’m doing the Tam jalapeno I’m going to do two of these make sure I do two of these so all I do because I don’t have a place marker for

Each individual soil block I’m also also try not to break the soil blocks because they’re just literally like smushed blocks of soil I try to shove the little popsicle stick like at the very front without uh actually breaking up the soil block and then I know whichever blocks behind it are like

Empty without a marker that’s just the same variety so that way I don’t have to label every single one I’ve got some high hopes for these I’ve got these seeds from am I Gardener and from Baker Creek but next year I’ve told myself moving forward which I do love

Baker Creek and I do love am my Gardener no no shade or hate to them at all I want to also try more like Mom and Pop type seed places if you guys know of anybody that is like has a seed company and you think their seeds are fantastic

Definitely drop a comment I want to explore more seed op options the challenge is going to be where where do I like grow all of these pepper plants because my goal is to get more organized for the spring garden last year was a really successful garden it was my most successful garden

I’ve ever grown oops that’s not these ones hold on trying to find my Peno pepper oh there’s my Pao pepper marker so last year I just wanted to make sure that I had seeds in the ground when I was I look back at the videos like when I was planting out the

Garden it it was a struggle it was hard I was like 9 months pregnant and just bending over was really difficult to put any type of seeds in the ground the whole experience was such a challenge I’m super proud of myself for like pushing through and just keeping it

Going I was more determined to just like get a a garden of any type and I wasn’t really being like thought out about it or strategic about it as a result everything was super unorganized as I have said and I had tomato varieties that were you know I didn’t think about

What was indeterminant or determinant or anything like that I just put things tomatoes on the cattle panel tralis and just hope for the best what you would want to do ideally is put indeterminant tomato varieties on your cattle panel trialysis because they’re going to just keep growing and growing and growing the

Determinate varieties are going to be smaller so you’re going to have a bunch of naked cattle panel CH chalises up at the top actually this year I’m not going to put any tomatoes on my cattle panels I’m going to do I really want to do the

Candy roaster squash I want to do some pumpkins watermelons and lofas so I’m really determined to grow a Year’s worth of sponges if possible this is the banana peppers but that’s a big goal of mine because I’m just trying to reduce my plastic use which is always a good

Thing you know use reduce recycle and I would love to grow all of our own sponges cuz all those organic like fiber Spong it all that type of stuff it’s expensive so if I can grow it and keep them at the house then that would be awesome here’s the cor cornado pepper

I’m going to put some up here I really want to grow those dang candy roaster squash that I have seen other people talking about and bragging about I don’t know why it just sounds so delicious to me and you guys might have grown them and think they’re okay they’re not you

Know whatever for me if I have it in my head that they’re going to be like absolutely Divine so I’ve never grown those before and I’m really hoping to have some success with those Amic cattle panels I just needed to figure out where the heck I’m going to put all these

Peppers we have extended the garden to a massive amount I just don’t know if where we have extended it is going to be best for Peppers specifically because it’s a little bit more shaded there but it does get so hot here that sometimes an afternoon shade for Peppers is really

Helpful oh and this is the shashito I’m doing two of these cuz it can like literally burn the pepper plants and make it so they actually won’t produce very well I’ve had my best pepper growing Seasons from I would say like my best Harvest goes through July after that it kind of

Tapers out I’m still getting Peppers produced but it’s not quite the same cuz it’s so so so hot here in Florida and then again in September is kind of when I have like a Revival for the Garden I would say that’s just my personal experience everybody else can have

Different experiences July and August is rough in Florida I always say that the summer months is like th those are almost like really they’re really hard to grow in they’re just really hard months to grow in the bugs are out of control when it comes to what is willing to attack your garden

And the Heat and it’s just craziness so if you can like a really beautiful thriving summer garden you’ve got my respect that’s for sure and I’m I’m hoping to do that this year and power through the summer garden and like just continue to Garden uh we’ll see last year I

Literally gave up because of everything going on just being overwhelmed with being a new mom and I was like I’m done I need a break for the summer so I actually took a month off of filming for YouTube and I just focused on my baby sometimes you just have to step away and

Take a break and there’s nothing wrong with that this year I’m hoping that I have a little bit more stanima for the summer garden cuz it’s no joke it’s a beast it’s it’s pretty hard to manage and I think the part that is the most complicated to manage for

The summer garden for me is the grass that gets in the beds it is crazy so that’s why I just talked about this in my last video I’m going to do some deep mulching in all of the beds making sure that no soil is exposed to the light that way we can

Help mitigate and control the grass tubers so that they can’t have access to the light and Thrive so that’s my course of action this year for the summertime is just mulch mulch mulch like crazy so I’ve gotten all of the seeds in their little soil blocks look at that I’ve got

30 different plants now I know not all of them are going to germinate at the same time or possibly not all of them are going to germinate so I’m going to probably also start some more on top of this can you imagine more pepper plants

So at this point what you would want to do I’m just going to literally put a little bit of so like soil over the top and I’ll uh close up on this maybe you guys can see here is like a little hole I don’t know if you can see I’m just

Going to push the soil on top so with soil blocks you will want to water from the bottom now this tray has like a very slight uh little tray underneath uh if you are using some type of like stainless steel or fiberglass tray or plastic tray just make sure you are

Watering from the bottom that water will Wick up in the soil and then the plant will be watered do not water from from the top or you are going to create a big mud pie and be super frustrated so that is the one thing with soil blocks you cannot be watering

Overhead you’re going to want to make sure that you keep an even level of moisture at least until they you see some type of sprouts you don’t have to water every day just occasionally feel the soil is it a little bit moist to the touch if not definitely give it a little

Bit of mist or water from the bottom I’m hoping that these will Sprout and germinate in about 7 days with the help of the heating mat that I have purchased and I’m just going to give it a try I’ve never uh tried a heating mat I’m going

To keep these ones inside I feel really good that we got this all done and our tomato Sprouts oh I I’ll show you guys really quickly the tomatoes that were all leggy into the side just in the time I’ve had them all out here in the sun

They’ve all gone up which is really cool so no issue there no you know the the threat of the of the Sprouts it’s over they’re doing good thank you guys so much for watching and listening to me yap on end if you want to see more content like this or follow my Spring

  1. I love love peppers and I feel you on wanting to do and preserve more this garden season! I had my second baby last July and had to abandon the garden. It’s hard letting all that hard work go, even when it’s for a very good (and cute) reason haha! This will be our year 😊

  2. The only peppers I was able to grow were so hot last year. So I ended up making Habanero Pineapple hot sauce to cool it down and have not had the courage to try my Carolina Reaper.

  3. I don’t watch YouTube much but I always find time to watch your videos. Keep up the good gardening knowledge we love learning

  4. Hope you have better luck with pepper seedlings than I have. My tomatoes are looking good though. They will be ready to transplant on Monday if the weather stays nice (10 day forecast) Always a rush to get them out early to beat the summer heat, but also dodge the late freezes. Neighbor brought me 2 eggs my chickens laid in their yard. Mine truly like to roam.
