CHICKEN GYROS
Servings: 8
INGREDIENTS
Marinade
2 cups Greek yogurt
¼ cup lemon juice
¾ cup olive oil
1 tablespoon kosher salt
1 tablespoon garlic, minced
1 tablespoon ground coriander
1 tablespoon paprika
1 tablespoon ground cumin
½ teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon black pepper
2 pounds boneless skinless chicken thighs, pounded flat
½ large yellow onion, peeled and root side removed
1 sturdy wooden skewer (roughly 10 inches)
Tzatziki Sauce
1 large cucumber, shredded
2 cups Greek yogurt
1 tablespoon garlic, minced
¼ cup lemon juice
2 tablespoons fresh dill, finely chopped
2 tablespoons fresh parsley, finely chopped
Salt and pepper to taste
8 pitas
Sliced onion
Sliced tomato
PREPARATION
1. In a large bowl, combine marinade ingredients and stir well.
2. In another large bowl or gallon plastic bag, combine chicken thighs and marinade, stirring well to coat. Cover and refrigerate for at least one hour and up to one day.
3. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
4. In a medium bowl, combine tzatziki ingredients and stir well. 5.Cover and refrigerate at least 30 minutes.
6.On a baking sheet or a large cast-iron skillet, use the onion half as a base and position the skewer vertically like a spit. Skewer the chicken thighs individually, rotating each one 90 degrees. Bake for 1.5 to 2 hours, until internal temperature reaches 165°F (75°C). Let cool for 10 minutes.
7. Carve off slices of chicken to fill a pita. Top with onion slices, tomato slices, and tzatziki sauce.
8. Enjoy!

no unknown red sauce that bites both on the enterance and the exit
Making this now but it won’t stand up smh I’m a lay it down for 40 minutes on each side or until it look like yours lol 😂 thanks 😊
Just made it. But instead of baking it, I bbq'd it on medium high for about twenty. Perfection😘👌Better than any take out I've had. Thanks a bunch. Will be saving this.
Ps that tzatziki sauce is the glue that brings it all together.
Anyone has tried throwing this in the slow cooker?I just bought one, and I love gyros, but all the recipes I’ve found for the slow cooker don’t marinate the chicken in greek yoghurt, and only use it as topping, but I find that the yummiest about this whole recipe. Please let me know!
So this was a complete fail with the wooden sticks, I tried it with multiple sticks but it still fell over. So instead I cooked it a pan and it came out just as good, so I will stick to the stove top method until I get my air fryer.
I would suggest using 3 onions half as the bottom support in a triangular formation. Otherwise it may fall. As mine is currently doing lol.
Made this today with 10 peace of chicken and here are a couple of tips: 1. Use foil (I used a parchment paper first and the juice burned on it and made a smoking mess in the oven, changed it to foil and life got easy!) 2. Skip the onion at the bottom (reason is that it gets soft and your tower keeps falling and it gets annoying. The first couple layers of chicken create the base for the rest of them, so no need for an onion!)
Made it and I've been eating off of it for a week and a half or two. It's just me so I'm glad it was a lot. Even the sauce was amazing!!! I love this recipe!!
Made the recipe it was amazing so tasty and affordable to make
I made this and it tasted great, the onions I had may have been too small because I had trouble with the meat falling over so I put it in a cake pan and ended up having it fall over, half the chicken was crisp and tasty and the other half was in a strange mixture of oil and sauce. I would recommend not making the same mistake and using multiple skewers
the music tho
THANKS YOU GOODNESS 🌟 AMAZING YUMMY 😋❤️🖤💚🤎 FAMILY DAPHNE COTTON ALWAYS 💜

This a healthy recipe I see absolutely
If you use 2-3 potatoes at the bottom (top and tail to make it flat) with metal skewers this will be more stable.
What's in the marinade
I’m Greek and I’m impressed
Stop you are doing that rong first put tzatziki and in the end you put fries ok 👌
In tzatziki we use yogurt, salt garlic, olive oil and cucumbers. (And pepper sometimes) when assembling we also put the tzatziki first as a layer in the pita and the we put the rest of the ingredients. If you spread the tzatziki in the pita then with every pita bite you are guaranteed a bit of tzatziki. Also as last topping we use fries and we wrap it in itself in a cone shape. Also we don't use cinnamon in the chicken. (Or at least I have never tested chicken gyros that smells/tastes like cinnamon)
Assembling the chicken in the wooden stick with the onion on the bottom is a great idea but the fact that it's not rotating you aren't gonna have that crispy end. Then again it's the safest way to make it at home so thumbs up for that.
I just enjoy watching tasty videos and I clicked on this one out of curiosity :p
I give it a 6/8
Got to be red onion though 😮
There is nothing as Greek yogurt. It is only yoğurt and it belongs Turkish.
Mine fell over in the oven… Lol 😂
This looks kinda plain like a gyros has also fried potato wedges with a drizzle of ketchup and mayo and the chicken must be at least put in the oven few times once you cut the chicken so that way it can stay crispy and tasty
I did the recipe and it turn out really dry
Cold bread no olive oil. Was crazy
Looking to make this for me and my two-year-old daughter, she currently goes to nursery and she ate this the other day and apparently ate it all, I want to see this for myself
My fiancé made it and it was delicious 😋
This is my go to chicken marinade!
I think 200 degrees for 1.5-2hrs is too much. At least it was for me, it turned out very dry.
Does it really need 11/2 to 2hrs in the oven with 400F. Seem to be a bit too much
For 1 1/2-2 hours ?!!!
