Just how productive can a vegetable garden be I spent the last growing season finding out and per square meter of growing space the self-sufficiency garden yielded on average 100 portions of veg including perennials and edible flowers that means if you only have a tiny backyard or patio there is nothing
Stopping you from enjoying an abundance of delicious seasonal food there are three factors that contribute to large yields soil fertility annual crops are hungry crops and so they need to be fed compost crop Choice grow what is suited to your climate and choose varieties that reliable and productive succession
Planting as soon as one crop is removed immediately plant out the next crop so you get multiple Harvest from the same patch of land over the year some crops won’t be anywhere close as productive like annual herbs and chilies but for self-sufficiency flavor and variety is also very important 100 portions of veg
Per square meter is a huge amount but if you’re just after quantity then there’s nothing stopping you getting way more per square meter depending on what your goals are

Also, companion planting helps maximize your yield. You can fill in those empty spaces with smaller plants like herbs, garlic, scallions, carrots, pole beans, and other things that don't take up much space.
Huw is the best! ❤
Glad that was a 1 and not an I. Read as an I it seemed pretty arrogant.
8kg isn't all that much. Fine if it's a hobby but to actually sustain yourself and your family it isn't enough
Aint no free rides in soil fertility; it has to be inputed.
Micronutrients have to be inputed.
When the cost of ALL the inputs is more than the ouputs; then production falls.
Try having the outputs claimed on heavey clay soils; without any inputs.
I have about 150 square feet of raised beds. and a big pile of homeade compost. I am going to try square foot gardening for the first time this year. but only part of the garden! Huw, you are a garden superhero!
❤
Wow!
All good stuff. My Scottish back garden veg plot is only 3m x 2m and partially shaded. Yet Im almost self-sufficient in onions (I have 2 left), and I have an abundance of garlic, lettuce, peas and beans. I also grow cabbage, carrots, tomatoes, kale and sprouts. It always amazes me how much you can get out of a small plot. Knowledge is power.
I’m hoping my veggie garden will be even a quarter as good as yours
The plants suited for my climate = cactus 🌵 😢
Omg I heard 100 portions of veg thinking it was for your whole garden and was thinking it sounded kinda low, didn't realize you said PER SQUARE METRE 😂😂
Can't wait to get my hands on your book…recently moved to a new place now taking apart the old beds to plan my new garden….
