Got tired of cleaning my camp chef mzgx and my Smokai cold smoker manually. Had a new real hood replace a microwave last year and thought, what the hell. Put all the parts from the smoker in the oven on self clean, taped up an old painting sheet and the wife never complained once! Even burned off the impossible to remove creasole. All parts were steel so I didn’t think any harm would come to the parts.

I’m undecided if this is stupid or absolutely brilliant.

I use one of those Harbor Freight weed burning torches, same principle, burn off the gunk.

I have thrown my camp chef tray on my regular gas grill to clean it. I decided it was a bad idea, or at the very least it was too greasy to burn away.

It came out clean, but my gripe it that the temp went from about 500 degrees one minute to 800+ too quick for my tastes. I at least understood not to open the hood while it was reading 800+, but I keep thinking that afternoon could have ended in stupid lessons being learned if we’re just a hair more careless.

Or, maybe my worries are for nothing. But that sharp increase in temp scared me away from the technique for now. In the future, I’ll scrape it and then burn off the remains.

Now cover the drip tray with foil. Way easier to replace every second cook, than scrape grease

Glad you found something that works for you but I feel like whatever you were doing before to clean your smoker, was way more than you need to do to clean it if you think this is more convenient.
