I am so upset that I have been eating Oroweat’s new “Grains Almighty” plant protein bread because the packaging says it is plant-based, but it actually contains whey. I was lazy and didn’t double check the ingredients at first. I guess I am learning the hard way not to trust food companies. This seems so unethical and possibly illegal. What do you all think?

Unfortunately plant-based is a loosely used term. Plant-based doesn’t mean free from animal products.

“Plant based” is an unregulated and vaguely defined term in food manufacturing, meaning anything from vegan to vegetarian to contains plant products in more than trace amounts. In short, don’t rely on it. Unethical? Maybe. Illegal? Definitely not.

Try Ezekiel bread. Vegan, no protein isolates, no added sugar, no oil, makes great toast.

    Whey, Soyboan oil, Sugar, Molasses…

Holy shit is this what Americans call bread?..

Sugar AND molasses in bread is wild. I know American Bread is generally much lower quality than European bread, but why on earth do you put sugar in bread? Especially a health-conscious bread? Do you taste the sugar?

Is this an extreme budget option or is this generally the quality of store bought bread?

    Just can’t trust them unfortunately

  5. Um, actually, most breads aren’t going to be plant based since yeast isn’t a plant…

There’s also strong evidence that you want to avoid soy lecithin. It may strip away your intestinal mucosal layer and that’s bad.
