Hello all, I recently inherited a green egg from my father in law. I'm not a big grilling person but would love to restore this to new for sentimental reasons for my wife, her dad would use it a few times a week. It's quite filthy and I'm not sure the proper steps to clean it responsibly, thanks for anyone's help.

Warm water and soap then order a new handle for the wood part as well as foam seal strip for lower and upper portion. You can buy the whole metal gasket with the wood handles or people sell wood handles on Etsy and probably Amazon. You could buy a whole new hinge piece from your local bee dealer. Any cracks in the firebox or plate setter? Does it even have those?
Light a fire. Let it rip. Then put in all those accessories. Order new gaskets. Light a modest fire. Let it semi rip. Then you should be ok to bbq on the 3rd burn
Dirty egg meg.
You 100% should spend the money on a new bandset. The rust runs risk of shattered porcelain in the future.
