Today we are starting our Vegetable Garden Overhaul. The Homesteads existing Beds didnt receive enough sun for some of the Sunny Crops I like to Grow, so this year we are adding TWO NEW GARDEN BEDs for a mix of Vegetables & Herbs using reclaimed cedar planks. This is a VERY RUSTIC design, simple and easy.

Hey guys and welcome back to girl girls wild so today we are on the homestead it is the beginning of March and honestly we have another beautiful spring day technically I know it’s not spring yet but I personally start getting excited like the beginning of February uh when the Celtic culture celebrates inul

Essentially that’s kind of when the sun comes back around and it is feeling like it is back today so there’s a couple things that we need to get done before Spring officially starts we have already started our 8 to 10 week seeds um so those are are getting ready to go and

Then also we’re going to build a homestead h house and then we’re going to add some garden bed in so if you’ve been following along this is now my second full growing season here on the homestead and the first year was a lot of trial and error so today what we’re

Doing is we’re adding two new garden beds in and these are going to be our vegetable and herb gardens and Essen what we’re going to be doing is moving them probably like 20 to 30t outside from the existing garden beds and and that’s just because the ones that were

Here previously by the previous owners they’re um just over shaded by this large maple tree and right now in the early spring they do good they’re going to be great for some of our shadier crops and things but really once like the height of our growing season it’s

Just not enough sunlight for things like peppers and eggplants and so first off we have to loosen the sod or the grass on top and what I like to do is go through through with a spade and essentially make these kind of little patches you can see here I’m actually

Pulling one out shaking off some of the dirt there’s some grubs and I’m going to use this to patch a couple holes because essentially I don’t want to take too much dirt out of the ground this will be an inground bed um but I do want to

Essentially loosen and get rid of as much grass and the roots of the grass that I can so I like to first I hatch it out with the spade and then I go in with the cultivator and I rake all of the grass and the matter out I always find

The most random things around the homestead I I’m going to do a whole video One day about all of the things that I found buried here um but yeah So So once you’re done with your cultivator or your heart Rak then you just go in with a regular leaf breake and this is just going to help you really just get the rest of that fine Leaf dirt weed matter out of there and just give it a

Quick like once over and then it’s time to fertilize so especially when you are going to be doing a fresh brand new bed like this you definitely want to make sure that you treat the soil somehow I do have a pretty good sense of this soil because I do already have existing beds

Here um but really this is just something that I like to sprinkle in as an added benefit it it feeds up to 3 months and just tossing this down now when we still have a couple weeks is a really great way to prep now it’s on to construction so the

First thing that I’m doing here is this is actually a piece of white oak it’s an inch and a half um by half inch white oak and I’m using this as essentially the posts so what I’m doing now is just kind of hammering it in tamping it in to

Get a measurement of where I want the bed to be and then once I have everything kind of set out you can see now um I’m just using the line as to where I had hammered it in as as a guide to where I

Want that to go down to and you can you know you can either just press down you can make a p pil hole you can use a nail because I’m using relatively thin wood I’m just I’m just going right in with the screwdriver and drewing the screws

In here just one screw on each side and now that I have the two main boards off it’s time to cut our end boards you can definitely use a um a saw that’s equipped for this however I just happen to have the chainsaw out there with me so I thought why not [Applause] Boom by no means do I recommend you know necessarily doing this but it’s how I did it so um next up here now that we have that fit and one of the things too that I think is important especially when you’re working out right on the ground like this things aren’t

Even so I really like to build it as I go along as opposed to cutting all my pieces there’s definitely a time and a place for that but this is just how I prefer to put these types of beds together and there is finished product number one

So the garden bed is 12T long and 4T wide and then we’re going to be doing another one right behind it where you can see the other plastic is down and yeah those are the existing beds in the back there that are too shady so we’re

Going to use those for our Shady crops and yeah see you guys the next one e
