Hey friends welcome back to Simply home and harvest I’m Jen and as you can see it’s that time it’s time to get our seeds started for this year’s garden and it’s an exciting time um it can be a little bit overwhelming when you start pulling all your seeds out and checking
Dates and I had these all kind of like laid out on the counter here and then I put my arm down and just like without thinking just spread them all in a mess so I guess it will still be okay okay let me see if I can get things
Straighten back up here for a second there we go now we’re back okay so I’ve been working on this this afternoon and trying to figure out what I want to go ahead and start what I need to save um for later and actually what I decided to save later I’ve already put
Back into my box here um the things I’m going to save for later are like pumpkin seeds and um I may go ahead I think I’m going go ahead and start these butternut squash seeds because if I remember they take a little bit longer um sunflower seeds our
Corn our corn we will direct sew into the ground um like wild flowers and stuff or other kinds of flowers I’ll wait on those radishes I’ll direct sew those trying to think was there anything else but right now as of right now in this moment I have not purchased any
Additional seeds these are all seeds from last year there are seeds that I saved last year from what we harvested so I’m I’m thinking I’m actually in a really good place as far as that’s concerned now if I plant some of these older seeds and they don’t come up then
I guess we will have to make a plan B and that plan B will probably be to go to the garden center and buy already started plants so I’m going to just I’ve got some um some sea trays the ones that I use for the geraniums they’re empty
Now and so I decided that we’re just going to start our seeds that way as opposed to I normally start all my tomatoes and stuff in like the red Solo cups but I think I’m going to do it this way starting out and then I will
Just pot them up as they grow so that’s a little bit different for me um but I’m feeling that this year so I’m just going to kind of go with what I’m feeling and the seeds that I have left over and we’ll just go from there and if there’s
Something else that later on I decide I want to grow I’ll go to the garden center and pick it up there so that’s my plan I’m going to bring you along we’re going to go ahead and get our seed starting mix mixed up fill our trays out
There and then we’ll start planting and at the very end we’ll see what we come up with okay so I did decide to do something before we get started outside I have these little sticks that a friend found for me and gave to me um like plant identifiers so I’m going to go
Ahead and write out each one of these and take these out out size so that will save me some time and I can just stick them into whatever I wherever I sewed the seeds so that I won’t get confused because if you don’t Mark where you’re sewing seeds when you’re sewing them all
Together like that you really will be confused you won’t know what you have until it comes up so I’m going to take some time to do that real Quick First thing we’re going to do is go ahead and get our seed starting mix into our tub here and I’m using mostly the Jiffy seed starting mix I did have some left over from last year that I’m went ahead and put in here and we’re going to
Get all of that pre moisten just basically going to get it from its state of being very dry to just a little bit of moist moisture in it you don’t want it to be like water running out of it but you want to give it a little
Moisture so your seeds will be off to a good start so that’s our first Step He all right so we’ve got our seed starting trays here I’m going to go ahead and get these filled up and then also I kept this container that I had crescent rolls from Sam’s in and so I just punched some holes in the bottom and we’re going to
Use this and see if we can get some extra starts in here first time I’ve ever done this as well so we’ll see if it works I thought since it has a lid that could act as our Dome and maybe encourage a quicker germination so that is the Plan So I’m just going to make a little hole with my one of my sticks here in each little sale just a place to get our seeds in not a big hole I could just stick my finger down in here like this just an indentation really is all we’re
Doing just so we make sure we get a seed in each Cale because the seeds are so tiny that I want to make sure they drop in somewhere and then we’ll just cover it back up so really you’re doing about probably like an eighth of an inch if
That just down in the soil a little bit start with our Ras and what I think I’ll do is I’ll just do like a section of each one probably all my Ras we like to have lots of Roma tomatoes and I’m just going to do two seeds in each
One and of course the wind’s starting to pick up sometimes sewing seeds on a windy day is a challenge I came out here because it was so calm so hopefully it will die down all right I’m gonna do two rows of Romas D Hey He All right so this is what we got accomplished we have six patunas six sweet William four Blue Lake bush beans here and then this is our tray of tomato plants I’ve got two rows so that’s eight Sals of Roma tomatoes four of the homestead four of the beef
Steak and then down below I’ve got my delicious Tomatoes four of those and then here are my cucumbers I just did four Wisconsin cucumbers which are more of like the pickling cucumbers two of the space Masters which are your longer um I call those eating cucumbers and then the muncher cucumbers they’re like
A snack cucumber I did two of those because I really don’t want to plant too many cucumbers um just because we still have a lot of pickles left and then the purple bell peppers that is an experiment this year I actually saved the seeds from some purple bell peppers
That I bought from a local Gardener so we’ll just see if um if they are good seeds and will produce this year and then over here I’ve got um two yellow squash two Rosemary a row of broccoli that’s four broccoli plants four more Bush Lake beans I thought if I sort the
Beans inside they might have a better chance outside because last year I had a hard time getting them to sprout in the ground so that is my thought process there and then for okra I just wanted to try something to see what it would be like to start okra inside although
Starting them in the ground um worked for me so I never had a problem with that but I thought you know what I got the seats I got the space let’s just give it a try Okay and then in our crescent roll box I’ve got a couple of rows of lettuce
Here a row of celery some basil and then butternut squash and complete experiment here but I’m already loving it because look at that moisture that’s going gather inside of this Dome and create its own little green green house I am actually debating on whether or not I
Need to keep it in my Greenhouse window I wonder if I covered it up and sat it outside like against the house how it would do because the lettuce is a cold crop the celery could stand cold probably the basil not sure about the butternut squash that would probably be the iffy
One and if I had given some forethought to this I probably would have put that somewhere else but I don’t know I’m going to think on this and decide what to do and that’ll you know save up my space in here but this is what we’ve got off to a
Great start hoping for a very prosperous Garden season all right so as you can see you do not have to have a lot of space to get started so grab yourself a pack of seeds now I like to order my seeds from Mi Gardener that’s a site you
Can go online and get your seeds from um Johnny seeds is also a good place to order seeds I got my geranium seeds off of an Etsy site um you can go to your local Garden Center and Order seeds there I’ve ordered seeds off Amazon so
Just do your research and get a good quality I like to find Heirloom Seeds those are my favorite to find because those you can save the seeds from each year and then that way you just keep an ongoing stock of seeds and hopefully you’ll never have to buy seeds again
That that would be an awesome thing I haven’t gotten to that point yet um but I get closer each year so that’s something fun also you can do but if you’re just like I don’t know where to start grab a pack of seeds I would recommend starting with like tomatoes if
Tomatoes is something that you eat a lot of or cucumbers those are easy to grow and you can actually grow those in a container on your patio on your porch so just start small grab a pack of seeds and put them in your window seal and
Just get started that way all right well it’s a beautiful day outside today it is pushing 80° outside beautiful sunny warm afternoon so I’m going to get out maybe take a walk this afternoon and I’m going to say goodbye to you now let me know in
The comments below if you are starting a garden for the first time if you are a seasoned Gardener I would love to know what you’re planning to grow in your garden this year so definitely keep me posted on all that so that’s all for today until next time remember to live
Simply use what you have and enjoy the moments you’ve been given I will see you all in the next one so here’s a look at our seed starting progress still no patunas but we’ve got some little Sweet William flowers flowers popping up there or blooms rather not blooms
Sprouts and we have this Blue Lake bush bean sprout just showing off it’s the only one up so far probably going to have to do something with that but look at our Tomatoes just about every one of them has produced a couple of sprouts in each sale they look so good our
Cucumbers are coming along excited about those and then our little makeshift Atrium Greenhouse here you can see we’ve got lettuce Sprouts no celery yet basil is up and we’ve got one butternut squash and then to round it out we’ve got some okra starting to poke through and broccoli looking pretty good
So all in all good success so far I’m excited to see what this is going to look like in the next couple of Weeks W

Gosh, you had really good luck with your germination. I just started seeds in the garden except for broccoli, cabbage and brussel sprouts, which I bought starts. My lettuce, spinach and 3 different kinds of squash have sprouted. The potatoes are being stubborn. I had foot surgery last Friday so I'm having to stay off of it for several days but I did go out and check on everything earlier. I just LOVE gardening. And, I made my first loaf of sourdough bread last week, FINALLY, from your tutorial. I'm loving doing that now. Plan to make chocolate chip cookies with sourdough this week. God bless, Jen. Can't wait for your next video. xoxDeb
