Is it safe to eat this chicken my father boiled? I know you are supposed to use certain bags to boil but he didn’t even unpack it and just used the bag it came in.

First glance? @#$ no! But it really depends on what type of plastic that is and what temperature it degrades/leaches chemicals into the water/food. If the chicken is cooked, it’s cooked. The harmful chicken based stuff will be safe to consume (within normal chicken guidline). As to the plastic? Youre gonna have to figure out what it is? HDP, LDP, PP? PE? Etc etc.

Has dad been into the bourbon, because he obviously didn’t read the instructions on the bag?
whatwouldjimbodo
Idk I wouldn’t trust it. My dad will heat up leftovers in a plastic grocery bag and sees nothing wrong with it.

I like your dad, he wanna hang out?

Does your father hate seasoning?

Boiled chicken? But why?

You should be fine. I am familiar with Cryovac shrink bags (company logo on bottom corner of left bird) from my time in food manufacturing. Plastic is LDPE and melts above the temperature of boiling water. Poultry plants actually send whole bird bags into a hot water tunnel after packing to get the plastic to shrink tight on the product. I will say this is not the preferred cook method but enjoy the meal. What’s for dinner tonight haha

A zero effort chicken in the oven would be much better than this. You can literally take the chicken out of the packaging, wipe it dry with paper towels, and plop it on a sheet pan at 375-425 for an hour-ish. Of course, using a roasting rack, wire rack, spatchcocking it, etc. as well as pre-salting/seasoning it for a few hours in the fridge to get the skin dry is more of a real recipe, but the bar here in comparison is pretty damn low.

No seasoning, why?
CarnivaDarker
Not unlike hard-boiled eggs. Very practical.

It’s possible it is microbially, but I’d be concerned about plastic melting into the food.
EnigmaShrouded
This is a great way to add a subtle plastic flavor !

I’ll let y’all in on a little secret. Bring a 12 qt or larger stock pot to a hard boil. Add seasoning if you like. Remove from heat and put in a thawed whole roaster chicken minus the bits in the cavity. Make sure the cavity fills with water. Put the lid on tight and just let it sit for 1 hour. This has only failed me once in decades and that chicken was just way too big.

Depending on the type of plastic, this is a horrible idea as far as food safety.
From a culinary standpoint, why the fuck would you not season your food?!
No.
Not_Paid_Just_Intern
Safe? Probably, assuming the internal temp reached the prescribed range. Worth eating? Debatable. Hope you’ve got some condiments at the table…
