Inherited this grill from a relative and while grateful, this thing needs a lot of work. Already spent a day on the grills but for the pit I’m just wondering if there’s a better way to remove all this ash and probably rust. I was going to scoop it all out or vacuum it then go in with a putty knife and citrusafe and try to spruce it up a bit.
Any tips or better ways to do it? Thanks in advance!

Go buy a new one. That is a mess
A self serve car wash?
The way you have planned is probably the best approach. It doesn’t have to be too pretty to work totally fine as long as it’s not interfering with the grill functioning properly.
