my name is Tia sves and I’m a
residential Horticulture agent with
Hillsboro County extension and today I’m
going to talk you about vegetable
gardening vegetables are easy to grow in
Central Florida our main seasons for
vegetable gardening are the spring and
the fall and here’s a variety of stuff
that is easy to grow so you can get
started in two ways one is by bu buying
seeds and planting seeds directly so
like the Cucumber that we have in our
garden that was started from seeds also
carrots and other root crops are good to
start from seeds directly in the ground
and same with bush beans now if you’re a
beginner Gardener bush beans are like
the number one easiest vegetable to grow
now a lot of people want to grow
tomatoes too and tomatoes are better
started in a small little flat like a
cell flat because they take about 6
weeks from seed to transplant and then
you’ll have a nice baby plant ready to
go which then you can plant either in a
container or directly into the
ground some of the easy things that you
can grow in your yard include carrots
and these are great for the family to
get out it’s like a treasure pulling
them out of the ground also cucumbers do
very good again these can be started
from seed and kale and swiss chard are
some of the best vegetables to grow
because you can just harvest the outer
leaves and then it will continually grow
so you can get a continual Harvest so
these are great things to start with I
would avoid planting um harder to grow
vegetables such as corn which takes a
lot of space a watermelon it’s a big
Vine again it takes a lot of space so
stick with these easy vegetables first
growing your food is good for your
health and your Wellness so this
beautiful basket of vegetables here this
is all stuff we’re growing in our garden
and you can grow these at home and
there’s so many benefits to Growing your
own food gardening helps to reduce your
stress just being outside and watching
things grow that helps with your
imagination and your sense of wonder
like after you plant a seed and then the
seed sprouts and grows and you also have
a sense of purpose you know coming out
to the Garden checking on your plants
making sure they’re watered and they
grow good as the plants mature you know
they need continual care with the water
and the fertilizer so it gives you a
daily activity to do not to mention too
that it’s good exercise you know pulling
weeds making the soil that’s getting you
out and healthy and while you’re outside
you can look at the patterns in the
leaves and take deep breaths and that
will help reduce your stress and boost
your immune system
