Got some “big beef” tomatoes plants and some miracle grow organic potting soil from Costco (I know, terrible). Planted them in a 10 gallon grow bag. They seem healthy, are growing, I see a few tiny tomatoes brewing and some more flowers I’m hoping will pollinate.

Just wondering if I should just keep on doing what I’m doing or if there is something I should do “better”

Thanks!

Honestly, no. They look really good!

Cover the soil will help keep them from getting dirt on leaves and catching something. Will also keep it from drying out too fast when it gets hotter.

Congrats on using tan bags. Very good choice if it gets hot.

You should mulch. I aim for 3″ of mulch on top of my soil.

Make sure you are fertilizing regularly. I use water soluble fertilizers every 2 weeks and insoluble every 6. Every time you water, some nutrients wash out (unavoidable and normal to all containers).

You need a plan for when the tomato outgrows that puny cage. Big beef is an indeterminate iirc which means you can end up with 8-10 feet of vines or more. General wisdom is to prune the suckers so you have one or two main stems, but some people say they don’t bother. Either way, you need a plan. You should also prune the bottom leaves soon, so nothing is touching the soil or will catch splashes of water from the soil.

A drip irrigation system on a timer is great but not necessary if you are good about the watering. Remember that regular, deep waterings are the way to go.

    Good luck!
