Betty demonstrates how to make a Beer Cheese Fondue. This is wonderful when served as an appetizer; it’s also great at a party, such as a Super Bowl party!
Beer Cheese Fondue
1 tablespoon cornstarch
2 cups finely-shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
6 ounces beer
½ teaspoon garlic powder
1/8 teaspoon ground red pepper (Go easy on the amount of red pepper, unless you want it quite spicy!)
a few drops hot pepper sauce (Tabasco, or other hot pepper sauce will be fine.)
whole-grain melba rounds
celery sticks, washed, dried with paper toweling, and cut into sticks
sesame bread sticks
slices summer sausage
In a small bowl, add 1 tablespoon cornstarch to 2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese. Stir until well combined and set aside. In a medium-sized pot, stir together 6 ounces beer, ½ teaspoon garlic powder, 1/8 teaspoon ground red pepper, and several drops hot pepper sauce. Heat beer mixture over medium heat until beginning to boil. Add Cheddar cheese/cornstarch mixture. Stir and cook until smooth and slightly thickened. (This beer cheese should have a nice dipping consistency, If it is thicker than you like, you may a little more beer; you do not want dripping consistency!) Place the beer cheese dipping sauce in an appropriate dish and surround it with fondue dippers of your choice. I chose whole grain melba rounds, celery sticks, sesame bread sticks, and slices summer sausage. You may vary these to your liking. Some other great options are sliced apples and toasted French bread cubes. Serve fondue while beer cheese dipping sauce is still hot or very warm. You may reheat the sauce, as needed. This is a great appetizer or party treat. With the Super Bowl coming up, you may want to use it for a Super Bowl party—accompanied by plenty of cold beer! Enjoy! –Betty 🙂
