  1. So, I have to say, I really loved these! I’ve always liked smoked foods (I have a smoker and make a lot of smoked meats), and back when I was a kid we ate smoked white fish around Christmas. In fact, the first tinned fish I ever ate (besides tuna and anchovies) was a tin of kippers.

Anyway, that’s all to say, the smoke level on these sprats were delicious, if not a little heavy on the palate nearing the end of the can. I found the lemon, olives, and hot sauce helped brighten the flavor nicely though.

The texture was perfect for me. Not too firm, but not at all mushy. Just a beautiful soft and moist mouthfeel. The tails weren’t too stiff, and I had no trouble eating those, and did not detect any bones, scales, etc.

As for the other flavorings, well…I could barely taste eh garlic, if at all. There was only a tiny bit in the can that I didn’t even see until I was halfway through. This was also the first can of sardines I’ve had with anything other than olive oil, and it was noticeable. It just tasted and felt oilier than a good olive oil, and like the smoke flavor, became a bit much by the end.

Still, eaten with a plate of other items to cleanse the palate helped a lot. Speaking of, on the plate is eggplant appetizer, and the rest I’m sure you know. I also snapped a shot of Tingly Ted’s hot sauce, which is heavily citrus-flavored and paired nicely.

EDIT: Sorry, forgot to mention the little black specs are pepper that I added into the can before eating.
