I dont know if this is a real phrase but i take the stalk and cut off the tough exterior and it is my favorite part. I call it heart of broccoli. Like heart of palms.

I don’t think this is a hack. People throwing that away are just being wasteful.

This is kind of like the Asparagus parts that got wasted. If you peel them (or squeeze out the innards); it’s good eating too. I told my workmates about the best part of broccoli, and then it was on ATK a couple weeks later. (A lot still goes in the garbage at work).
