Today Jim & William (our Amish hired man) are plowing our vegetable garden with our draft horses, Ken (Percheron) and Baron (Suffolk Punch)! Jim shares a little about how to plow with a walking plow.

Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horse farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

way too deep first thing work pretty deep yeah C step C [Music] oh good morning everybody so this morning we’re attempting to plow with our Walkin plow that I got from my friend George um totally new plow totally new situation um these guys have never plowed with the walkin PL before because I have William it’s to me the wisest thing to do is to have him help me so we are going to start together and then maybe we can change it and work alone after a little bit so we’re going to do some adjusting as we as we go along ready up [Music] [Music] I don’t care how you do it is that how you do it I oh that wasn’t as bad as I thought I’d go a lot deep to go a lot deeper yeah how’d that feel to you that feels pretty good I think with the wheel with the wheel on the front you can adjust it a lot better too well you shouldn’t adjust it from the [Music] wheel you prefer I stop yeah good oh yeah C care oh that’s not scaring William could you run over and grab in the front of the on the plow that I took back in there there a a paint scraper go grab that yeah so I’m not sure if we’ll be driving alone today or not bar is is not as calm as I thought he’d be or hoping he’d be also as you can see the plow is not scouring so what that means is when it’s scouring good there would be no dirt on here this plow has been sitting around for a while I don’t know how long it’s been since it’s been used last and it’s Rusty so what’s happening is the the dirt is is clog kind of clogging up I guess you could say on the mle board and it’s not scouring properly so we’ll clean that off every few times and try to get it cleaned up so it scours better the plowing is going fairly well um but it’s it’s still kind of a Twan job for this situation but it really with these two horses with the two of us we can get this job done and no time at all so we’ll probably just continue this way oh there that went way to didn’t out pretty good C St C [Music] St oh all right that’s really way too deep we don’t need to plow that deep is the other side that deep that is deep I’m not sure is let’s try one more time see what it looks like over there I C out G over there so one reason why we’re doing it this way is because we already cleaned up the other plow Willam cleaned it up the other day and and so oh so we won’t want to bother getting that dirty I cuffed [Applause] up if you’d like to know how we clean it up show you a little video of how we clean it up we use the pressure washer PL is done for the year and is this morning getting cleaned up and so it can be put away until the fall love our pressure waser for [Music] that see see g g g g g g care oh hi step C step yeah we got to take it up at least one link maybe two I’m not digging quite so deep I don’t want I don’t want to hit Stones yeah I’m sure it’s although it’s plowing beautiful it’s plowing yeah oh let’s just go to five five y this that get for there oh I got I already got it I already got it okay want me take it yeah I don’t think we we’re not need it anymore I don’t look right all right ready C step careful je g g that g g g g g [Applause] oh hey careful step careful do he nice out cough up see G G G oh my lines aren’t long enough to plow anyways I’d have to get some extensions get extensions on I’m sure I could plow with them I’m sure you could too yeah but uh I kind of want to get the job done so let’s just keep going and C step careful do the walking plow pulls more dirt up onto the ground than the riding plow does doesn’t whena yeah didn’t do anything about it G oh yeah take a break go ahead careful step care go ahead s careful step wait wait okay careful step I’m going to take it up to four careful hey [Music] okay careful step careful [Applause] something can’t remember what it was if I recall remember that part just go a little ways and we’ll stop careful step you see how long those line stretch can’t do from here okay so I ended up taking it up to the fourth length because if I remember the heel back here of this the heel back here of the plow which is right here should be rubbing on the bottom of the ground and the way it was working before it was actually in the air and so it’s kind of had this tipping down motion and it wasn’t straightening up so by shortening them up it lifts up the front of the P out a little bit levels the plow out a little bit and we’re not you notice when we first started the dirt was pouring right over the top almost yeah now it’s staying at this level and not going too deep at a level position now it’s more level so I’ll go around a few more times like this and I’ll let you plow see if you can see a difference between what I did go ahead careful step I think it’s easier to plow now too see that I had some longer lines I’d try it because I think they’d go they’re getting B every time hey okay careful step [Music] [Applause] careful step TR to come here stay right on my shoulder I want to explain a few things okay good I’m looking for your angles [Applause] okay I want to explain a few things as we’re plowing up through here and uh you guys that want to learn from an expert this is not the place to be is that scour but uh but both William and I we can do it um I’m sure now if we had longer lines I would probably try to to do them alone drive them alone and I’m sure I could um but it’s it’s just one of those things I really don’t care and just a kind of a thing out there to you guys that are starting to use horses um don’t be hesitant to get some help there’s times like plowing plowing is more than half the job of fitting your soil if you do a good job of plowing that soil is is so much better to fit to get ready to plant um don’t be so uh prideful I guess that you think you got to do it on your own you got to plow you don’t want somebody helping you that’s that’s kind of a cop out type of thing well I’m telling you it’s not and sometimes it’s so much better for myself I’m in a situation where I got a lot of stuff to do I don’t want to take the time to plow alone right now and William is here so I’m going to take advantage of it and have him help it’s plowing beautiful with the two of us doing it it’s doing such a much better job than it would have been if I tried to do alone Baron is not at all used to this Ken would be but Baron is not um so anyways just just a something to think about when you’re when you’re thinking about doing jobs like this or other jobs don’t don’t let uh um your ego get in the way of doing things um you know get some help do it with some help um anyways I want to explain a few things as we go along how how to run a plow um it’s really just backwards with what with with what you think but go ahead William and I’ll try it’s a pretty short window short furls here so I don’t have a lot of time but let’s see if we can do so as we start off I need to bring the plow a little bit closer to William and then as we go right where I want it to be you just stay straight but if as we’re going along you tip your plow handles back and forth left and right but when you want to go left you tip it right when you want to go right you tip it left so it’s just backwards of what you would expect and at the end you just flip it over like that and it will come right out of the ground every time so when we come up to the ends we kind of try to go a littleit past where we want to do if we cut our Corners too much it makes more work for whoever is doing the plowing especially if you’re plowing alone so he’ll get sat there and uh then I will position my plow and this is an old Syracuse plow which is a lot lot lighter than the oh the Pioneer plows I had I had one of them on and forget that they’re so darn heavy this is a lot lighter but it’s still heavy enough I personally prefer having a wheel up front I it helps me spin around better um but we don’t have it on this one and and that’s okay uh I I could get one it’s not a big deal but for day we’ll we’ll deal with it but yeah those are some of the tricks to it all tipping back and forth to steer it so go ahead William careful step careful step the biggest most important thing is getting your horses to plow slow and to for your fural horse to stay in that fural no matter [Applause] what if my friend George saw me plow he might be a little embarrassed that we we’re using two people here but I really don’t care um I’m more import more interested in trying to get a as close to a perfect Furrow as possible okay careful step when plowing goes good it’s quite a joy to plow with a Walkin plow there’s no doubt it’s harder than the riding plow but there’s just that skill element to it all that makes you feel quite good about how you’re doing if you if you do it right so I’m going to let William take his turn at driving I mean the plow work although I personally would just as soon plow than drive I think it’s a lot of fun but uh we’ll take our turns I C St [Applause] careful generally when you’re plowing also you’re not walking way up here on the cloud ground you’re walking in that Furrow which is actually a smoother easier place to walk g j g half [Applause] g g g there G G oh ni step careful if I go when you’re not quite ready just hollo g g g over there G G G oh nice step careful careful St g g y g g [Music] g g G oh I cuffed up careful so you guys that would like to learn more about plowing there’s a couple other guys that are you doing YouTube videos on plowing with a Walkin plow Zach odm and brand an Anor and uh they’ve both this spring done a fair amount of plowing and they drive and plow themselves and uh oh do a pretty darn Fair job of it I must say C step oh yeah and I can’t forget my friend Leonard from Trinity Dairy that’s another YouTube channel can’t believe how deep that’s still plowing yeah still g g g g GS a little deeper you’re not holding up on the plow at all are you I don’t know cuz if you hold up at plow It Gos deeper oh just kind of weird yeah kind I mean I can adjust it from there but it’s down as low as it can go yeah and let just pick it up so I’m actually quite surprised with this plow I’ll have to call up George and ask what the situation is with it but uh this plow share is worn so generally you don’t plow as deep if you got a poor plow share um if you put this these up and down holes the further down you go the more it lifts the shallower pulls so it’s down as far where it should be to be lifting the highest my tugs heel chains are fairly short you know I expected situation like this to just be should be skim plowing in other words just plowing you know like 3 4 Ines but on that side there it’s still going in 10 in deep almost almost yeah I cued up I have to get hold of my buddy George care [Applause] g g g g g g g g g g h oh I C that there GE it’s the first stone that really affected us messed up our Pearl huh oh I like it when we don’t have to stop when you hit it just right like you just did there we wouldn’t have even had to stop if I just kept right on rolling yeah C stop C stop y g g over G over there g g g careful careful oh okay so right here in our last pass we hit a rock and it shoved William in the plow and this way so it’s a little bit crooked but we’re almost to the center here we’re not going to worry about it we’ll go on through there and finish this up and uh when you’re holding by hand you hit a plow you really can’t have complete control of what’s going on and so that shoved it right out but as you can see look how deep that is up through there and we’re can’t go much more adjustment to make this better so that’s kind of weird to me anyways cuffs up oh we’ll fix we’ll fix on the way back through hey care stop [Applause] careful g g g g G careful g g careful g g careful h h h h careful [Applause] [Applause] perfect g g g g okay William I’m going to go and we’re just going to Cuff that one over careful h h Huh huh [Applause] huh [Applause] beautiful I caught on camera but that was a good that was a good cleanup g g yep g g g g careful careful careful careful oh guess you had it I C out careful a lot of people think the feral horse is the most important but a lot of ways they the land horse is more important than the fural horse because the land horse kind of controls the the width of the cutting of what they’re cutting if that land horse is going way close into the furl G it’s a a narrower careful ha ha ha ha ha a narrower cut oh oh right the rock oh yeah will why don’t you roll that rock out there so here’s that rock that William hit two times before and then we were able to come back and flip it out of there so that’s great believe we’ve gardened all these years and well we’re plowing deeper that’s why yeah okay now this is probably the hardest part of plowing finishing up the dead F because as Baron’s going along he wants to walk up top but then he wants to jump in the other Furrow and it’s just a pain in the neck some people do this with one horse which is probably a great idea if you got one good horse but we don’t and so we’ll just do our best we can all right ready cap up [Applause] careful g g g of there g g g g g g g g over there g g g g g g careful ha ha oh okay so as we plan this dead F what is going to happen is we’re going to go deeper and deeper unless we don’t unless we do something about it my my tugs my chains are about as short as we can go let’s take them up actually let’s go one more at least I’ll get this one put that three and uh also is one of the trick we can do so that we won’t dig too [Music] deep so another thing we can do is you can actually push down on those handles it’ll lift it up a little bit we don’t want to pop it all the ground though yeah but I don’t think that’s going to happen but just if you can just push down enough so it lifts it so we aren’t plowing these we got two more pass yeah if we can not dig too deep it’ll be a lot easier we won’t have this big hole down the center yeah I CED [Applause] up she [Applause] C careful g g g g g g g over there g g g g g g g g ha H careful H oh okay same thing here I don’t know what else we can do down as low as it is there yeah can’t go any shorter there but hitting there he oh wellow I C up [Applause] careful g g g g G careful g g g careful careful let’s not worry about that let’s keep it yeah see if we can scrap a little off here push way [Applause] down that’s good f it right out good oh okay totally happy with that looks pretty nice yeah so that’s going to do it for today and for today’s video you guys have a great day and we’ll see you next time [Music]

  1. I found it interesting to watch Ken's disgust at first as he shoved Baron over on the turning "G". Would you like a back furrow in the middle of the garden, believe it might work better!

  2. When we finished plowing each year, we sprayed the soil off the plow and let it air dry. A can of Rustoleum painted the moldboards to prevent rust.

  3. It’s hard for me to imagine how they used to pull into a 20-30 acre lot and plow it.
How many days would that take?

  4. Skippy’s behavior seems to be getting worse around both horses and people. Please get it corrected before there’s a big problem

  5. Love the great job Brenda did on filming the garden plowing job. Such great shooting angles. Great video – love learning all about plowing with horses.

  6. The garden looks really good. Very nice plowing job. I think I remember in the past that Jim said some horses don't like that sharp turning over and over again. Although Baron needs more of this type of plowing experience, at least he did not seem to be bothered.

  7. That's amazing how William managed to get the two first furrows so straight and parallel. Looks like it works as fast as the sulky plow, only that it's more exhausting and you need two men. The result looks great. Have a great week! 💜-Chris

  8. I usually spray my moldboards with red oxide primer after I get finished plowing, I’ll pressure wash them and then spray them with a good coat of primer, it keeps rust off and also comes off after one pass through the field!

  9. Skippy cracks me up! The guys are working their butts off and Skippy just has to be in the middle of things! 😂

  10. Why is Skippy allowed to nip William in the legs?!? OH NO!!!
If he’s not gonna b trained properly, even w the horses he jumps up in their faces in the fields. NO! It’s time he is gone. You wouldn’t allow your kids to act up, Skippy is no different.
    Extremely disappointed. 🤨🤨

  11. My Folks Had a way of Connecting the Lines, probably with a Hornes Buckel allowing for Adjustments as needed. Then they placed the Lines over one Shoulder (generally the Right Sholder and around under the Left Arm as thy were mostly Right-Handed). This way thy could hold the Lines and the Plow Handel's as needed and use Gee and Haw.
One Plus I see with this is you never Drop the Lines completely.
The Drawback is if the Team Spooks for some reason you might get drug a few feet before getting things under control again.
Wors comes to Wors you can Bend over and put your Arms and hand Foreword and let the Lines slip off over your head. Letting your Team run away with anything is not a good idea! Raymond W. King Eckert Colorado

  12. Brenda great job with the camera angles especially the one where you went above the horses necks shoeing how hard they work to pull the plow. Very cool!!

  13. Looks like your beautiful Black Soin is busting up nicely, maybe a little damp as it is sticking to the Plow. I wish things out her in Western Colorado were as Damp. Looking like another Drout year very short on Snow as far as I can see.

  14. To the uninitiated (like myself) it is magical how well Ken knows his job. Nod to Jim's meticulous training. The way Ken positions himself exactly in the last furrow to start the next line. So smart. What a good boi..Shout out to William who is such a a hard worker . ❤️ from 🇨🇦…

  15. This is absolutely beautiful and I can’t wait to see the garden grow! The flowers 💐 and greenhouse are exquisite❣️ You guys are so close to 100k!!! Keep plowing! (Get it?! Plowing 😂) I crack myself up 🤣

  16. You're doing grate Jim and WIlliam, your headed in the right direction with having no Experience. Having Help is a very good idea for a Beginner. This is a little like learning to Walk, you have to do it to learn how to do it. When you get some experience under your Belts in how this Waking Plow business Works Youla be able to do it alone. Have a Wonderful Day

  17. Nice finish to the plowing!! Finishing the dead furrow nicely isn't easy on a tractor either. Great video!!!

  18. We used two people when plowing with steers, and always started in the center of a piece. The last time I plowed with two young steers and could not keep up with them. Must be getting old at 83. ha ha.

  19. ,🍓👍👍👍👍👍🤩😍😍😍😞❤️❤️💕💕💕💕💕🍓🍓🍓🍓👍👍🍓👍👍👍👍

  20. Skippy is doing just fine . Typical farm dog puppy . I would keep him in the house or tied up when mowing hay . We learn,t the hard way . Bye

  21. I sorta kinda think it's a little funny when the horses are working & then all of a sudden, you hear one letting it rip with "poot'en" in the wind!!!
Beautiful job of plowing Jim & William.
As always, Brenda, AWESOME job of following & recording!!! ❤❤❤❤

  22. What a rich seed bed you have prepared. Can't wait to see the greenhouse plants put in the garden. Brenda, just an aside here…I truly miss that wonderful opening song that you used to play with the clip clopping.
