Hi, I’m Clare, Welcome to my vegetable garden vlog.

I garden at home on our farm in Staffordshire, UK. (Zone 8a/b I believe). My vegetable garden comprises of a 250 sq metre formal home allotment style plot which consists of raised beds with wood chip paths, which is my kitchen garden, plus additional vegetable growing areas and a previously neglected home garden.

I have a 20 x 12ft polytunnel from First Tunnels and two 8 x 6 ft greenhouses.

In this episode, filmed Friday 31st May, I plant out my pumpkins around my wooden archway in my raised beds on the vegetable plot. I also make use of my pallet manure compost storage area to grow the larger trailing varieties of pumpkins. I am growing Jack Be Little, Baby Boo, Uchiki Kuri, Crown Prince, Howden and Polar in the vegetable garden. I also have Dills Atlantic Giant to grow in elsewhere on the farm.

[Music] [Music] hello welcome back we’ve had a really wet week this week but it’s Friday today and last day of May and the sun is shining today’s episode is another Monumental day because I’m actually going to be planting some pumpkins out the big trailing Pumpkins I’m going to put in this manure store now we filled this up in Early Autumn and it’s two pallet length this way so it’s over 2 m this way way and it’s the big pets on the side so it’s just over a meter I think it’s 1.2 M that way as well this wasn’t completely fresh manure when we put it in here so it has done some good rotting down hopefully in that process I’m not going to take the sheet off of the top of it either what I’m going to do is cut holes in the sheet so that I can plant through that directly the pumpkin varieties that I have that could go in here are Dill’s Atlantic giant yes I know huge but I will Top it so I only hopefully get get one big pumpkin off of it we also have a variety called Howden which I believe is a Halloween pumpkin as well and I have polar bear and Crown prints so I need to just have a quick look at which ones of those Trail the longest and see whether I try and squeeze lots of pumpkins in here but I was thinking of three one in each corner and one in the middle to sort of Trail in those directions I feel a bit like an air hostess it’s going to Trail here and here it didn’t take long to clear off the top of all of the things that we’ve stored over here during winter can’t remember how many layers of plastic is on it oh several this is old silage sheets that we always end up with on the farm anyway [Applause] smells like soil now it doesn’t smell like manure even though its texture isn’t completely soil it’s going to be quite fibrous because obviously the cattle are bed on [Applause] straw I’ve got a little bucket here what I’m going to do first just to help me out is Peg back these bits of plastic I’m just going to remove some bits of it which I’ll just put in my other compost bin right so I’ve taken out a suitable amount here I’ll bring this arrow in and what I’ll just do now is just top it up with some soil just to form a bit of a barrier for the new roots to go down into cuz I thought they might be a bit delicate to be straight in the mock and I’ll go ahead and I’ll do that for all three holes [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] I think that’ll do as an experiment I do have spares in case they all shrivel up because they’re in the muck or slugs or wood light or whatever it is gets to them but let’s go and pick the ones we’re going to plant out and give it a go I’ll leave that there cuz I will put it in the compost bin shortly let’s go and choose those pumpkins it’s warm in here so this here is the Dills Atlantic Giant and thinking about it these might be quite good to grow on the actual Muk Heap in the farmyard itself because I want to use that Muk eventually and by putting these in it maybe it’ll help suppress any weed seeds from blowing onto it over summer so for the moment I’m thinking maybe I won’t grow those off of there so that leaves the crown print polar bear and the Howden so I have a crown print here and have another one here so I do have a spare and if I don’t lose this one then I’ll be giving this one to Carrie from dog on the plot to help her out with her pumpkin issues because I’ll be seeing her at Gardener world live on the Sunday if any of you are visiting there come and say hello to us and this is the Howen so I’ll take those two and I need to find a polar bear now oh these are a lot smaller because they’re in smaller pots so I have this one and I have this one so I think I’ll plant these three exciting it was definitely too hot in there now I don’t think the polar bear grows as long as some of the other ones from what I can find out online so I might put the polar bear in the middle and then take these ones off the edges have just been and got some more soil because there’s not enough there definitely not enough there just to try and not burn the roots oh yeah they’re a little bit pot bound aren’t they right now I’m leaving some room there I’m going to fill a lot of strch around there hopefully get him away from the Slugs and then on this end I’m going to put the Howen and again leaving space to put down some slug protection apparently I’ve blocked myself in a bit and the final sacrificial lamb is this beautiful crown prints I think he needs a bit more soil on gy first [Applause] this bag of stuff here is called strulch now if you’re not familiar with strulch it is mineralized straw and I buy it mainly for weed suppression in the past but it is also supposed to be a good slug deterrent and some people swear by it other people say it does absolutely nothing so I’m going to give it a go because I know that pumpkins happen to be one of the favorite dishes for Slugs so we might as well try it might we and see how we get on now we have a lot of straw here on the farm anyway because we obviously bed our cattle on straw but the reason that I’m not using our own straw for this purpose is basically because we buy it in we don’t make it we buy it in so we have absolutely no idea and neither does the transporter of the straw who uses what chemicals in the process of growing their wheat barley oat that makes the straw we buy barley straw so for us buying this in is less of a risk than wondering what we are putting on our beds all around our plants now you do need a good thick layer of it and hopefully that is a good thick layer of it and we’ll have to see if it does anything to protect them I hope so I’ll crack on and do the rest [Applause] so there we have it organic pumpkin defenses hopefully they will do the job I think this is going to be a real test to see if stral really does live up to what it says it is I’ve used nearly a whole bag here so I have put it on quite thickly to give them the best chance and to give strch the best chance of it being a success so we’re going to have to report back aren’t we in a couple of days and see if I have any pumpkin left fingers [Music] crossed I really hope that they are successful because I’m quite excited at the thought of pumpkins which leads me to the next planting out today which is to finally turn this Archway into the pumpkin Archway that it was built to be and I am really excited about that it seems 5 minutes ago since we built this but that was way back in the depths of late winter when it seemed forever away that we’d be putting pumpkins out and yet here we are so the varieties I’m going to put here are Jack belittle baby boo and I do have a single of cuchie Curry because nothing else germinated and I have to say even that one doesn’t look particularly happy going to go for the theory to just get it in the ground and see if that helps matters now the rest of this bed well the rest of both of these beds were destined to be given over two squashies anyway and then somehow or other I seem to plant lots of daas in here and I’ve put some outdoor Tomatoes here and I keep thinking about these and I feel like I should keep them here but I never ever had outdoor tomatoes on my plan because I’ve got 20 two plants now in the poly tunnel and we already established that I don’t like tomatoes so do I really need to be growing these varieties outside because I’m looking around and I don’t actually know where else to put the cetes and I have mashed potato squashes as well so yeah it’s all getting a little bit running out of space so for now I’m going to keep them here I’m going to put the pumpkins out and then I’m going to have a little bit of a look around and see what I can move where because obviously in another month or two I’m going to have the onion beds and the garlic bed free so I’ll have two big beds to put things in shortly but for now feel like I’m running out of space but we’re not there yet so let’s just get these pumpkins done right so we need Jack belittle baby boo Jack Bel little that’s baby boo and I’ve got two more baby boos as well let’s get started this is the not particularly happy aoi curri that I have in the greenhouse I had potted it on the last couple of days and it it is starting to Green up a little bit the top leaves anyway I put that at the end and that has the option to do a bit of sprawling this way and also to go up back of the archway this is really exciting I can’t wait for it can’t wait can’t wait please live please don’t let the slugs eat them now this is another bed that was well manured last year so I don’t want to put too much in it this time I know they oh they don’t have the best Roots do they so hopefully getting in the ground is what they want and they’ll do a lot better I think I needed to remove anywhere near as much soil as I did that’s one now I was hoping to germinate more of these than I have but this is all that germinated so whether it’s too many or not enough under the archway this is what we have oh now he’s got better roots [Music] [Music] [Music] and here I am back with yet another bag of strul bought all these with my own money so fingers crossed it works but I’ll be able to review that for you later on in the season and we can keep an eye on and just see if it is worthwhile exercise so I’m going to go ahead and mulch both of these B now all around the trellis as well I don’t want slugs to be able to climb up the trellis onto the leaves too [Music] [Music] they’re all in and they’re all mulched with the strulch which is a little bit of a tongue twister but if the manufacturers claims on the bags all to be believed then hopefully these will be well protected from the Slugs I also went ahead and mulched the Brassica bed on Monday and obviously it’s Friday today and thankfully so far there doesn’t appear to be any nibbled leaves in there now obviously we might not have much of a slug problem in this plot either so you know maybe I should have left one side without protection just as a comparison but because I don’t have enough spare plants to really truly sacrifice these I wasn’t prepared to do that this time but maybe that’s something I should do in the future how are you protecting your pumpkins I do keep being told that that is the favorite dish for Slugs so what are you doing to keep your pumpkins safe from slugs this year because I’m on a planting Out roll I’m going to plant out this cette variety is called Boulder or Boulder nice I’m not sure how you pronounce it but this is the one that I said had the round stripy cett on it I do have a bog standard green cette to plant somewhere as well later on just need to find a home for that one oh I’ve just realized I forgot to put the fish Blood and Bone in so I’ll just sprinkle some around it and I’ll water that that in shortly it just needs watering in now so I’ll go ahead and do that and I’ll catch you in the next video look after yourselves bye

  1. 🀞🏻 with the Strulch, look forward to seeing the update on its performance. I found nematodes really good for slugs with x2 applications, but I have a rampant snail population πŸ™. In my experience copper tape is also really effective around raised beds and pots, but loses its efficiency after a growing season and therefore gets replaced every year. I’m trialling Rocket Gro Magic Mulch on an open area and so far so good.

Loving the early Saturday morning updates to inspire my gardening weekendπŸ™‚

  2. Morning, watching while pricking out some more LETTUCE πŸ₯¬ got everything crossed for your pumpkins πŸŽƒ x

  3. Can't wait to see that compost muck pile in a couple of months! πŸŽƒ FYI the direction of the second true leaf of a pumpkin seedling is the direction the vine will grow. Can make training them up an arch easier if you're in the know πŸ˜‚

  4. Hello Claire, Lovely video, i can’t wait to see those pumpkins take off! Lovely to see all the young, just makes you smile 😊 🌱

  5. Thats what i need to do with my compost heap as it is growing so much stinging nettle. i think ill just pop some back plastic on to smother the weeds.

  6. Hi Clare .I have never had a slug touch my courgettes ,squash or pumpkin in 40 years .They generally don't like the spiky hairy leaves so I'm puzzled πŸ€” Having said that they seem to even be munching on garlic this year .

  7. Hi Clare great video and some lovely shots of the animals. My one and only pumpkin got eaten so a neighbour gave me one and I’ve planted it and put a huge plastic water bottle over it (bottom cut off obviously) with Vaseline smeared all over it and so far it’s survived. I’ll know when I go to the plot today if that’s still the case. 🀞

  8. Sweet peas 😍 cant wait for mine!

Those pumpkins should romp away in the muck pile, look forward to seeing their progress πŸŽƒπŸŽƒ. They look lovely healthy plants so should have a good start. Ive had mine out for a week or so and so far so good, no slug attacks yet.

Lovely that the canada geese have a nice safe location with you to rear their young. Pretty cute πŸ₯°. Thanks Clare, enjoyable update πŸ™‚πŸŒ±

  9. Lovely video Clare, I too am growing some of my pumpkins on my compost heaps, it worked well last year so fingers crossed for this year, mine are not as far along as yours though. They look great near the arch, I hope they give you a great display and harvest. Take care
