Noticed this darkened area on my black beauty tomato plant. There’s a gash at the bottom where I clipped off a vine that was touching the soil – did I just doom the plant? Not sure if it is supposed to look like that given the name of the plant 🤷🏻‍♀️ Help!

Tomato plants are surprisingly resilient. I bet it will be fine.

It’s a little overpruned for my tastes, but nothing is doomed. The plant looks healthy.

Looks fine to me, the gash at the bottom is probably fine and I think the darkening of the stem just happens sometimes when it gets exposed to a lot of sunlight. New growth is looking a little purple too, maybe a bit of magnesium deficiency preventing it from producing enough chlorophyll? Throw a little epsom salts in there and see if it greens up more, just a tiny amount.

Looks fine. In my experience, Black Beauty tend to peel the stem skin if you try to snap off stems/suckers. I’d use a set of scissors or snippers that were cleaned with a bit of rubbing alcohol. That way, you’ll get a clean cut with no tearing

The dark colour is normal for varieties with lots of anthocyanin, like Black Beauty.

Thanks for all your advice 🙏🏼 I’m relieved that my black thumb hasn’t botched this up yet

  7. I would carefully tuck as many branches as you can to the inside of the cage. If they’re too big don’t bother but they won’t have any support until the next cross wire unless you tie them up.
