Dollar Tree Coffee Ice Cream

Wow what a surprise! Dollar Tree’s unbranded (distributed by Greenbrier International) Coffee ice cream has a strong (but milky) roasted coffee similar to Haagen Dazs Coffee (review).

• PRICE: $1.25 for 14 oz pint.

Perhaps even a tad too strong, approaching a coffee flavored hard candy. But impressive nonetheless.

This Dollar Tree ice cream is missing the milk fat of Haagen Dazs (2/3 cup is 170 calories vs Haagen Dazs 300 calories) and also has more air (weights 86 grams vs Haagen Dazs 128 grams). There definitely as much delicious milk creamer taste as there is in Haagen Dazs. However there is a similar taste of Starbucks Coffee Frappuccino in the glass bottle. And the ounces are the same at 14 ounces.

From how my Dollar Tree ice cream appeared when I opened it, it’s pretty possible it melted. The texture of the ice cream was a little frosty (cold) and stuck to the inside of my cheeks a bit. Haven’t had that happen before!

• RATING: Respectable 6.5/10. This ice cream took some shortcuts and I can tell. The texture isn’t entirely where it needs to be. And there’s a hint of artificial flavor in there. But surprised to find a strong coffee flavor at Dollar Tree! Rated higher because of affordability.

• WOULD REPURCHASE?: Probably not, but I’m interested to try other flavors now.

• SIDE NOTE: I originally decided to get my first unbranded Dollar Tree ice cream because I wondered how it would compare to Dr Bombay ice cream (review) which had some textural challenges in the ice cream base. It turns out Dollar Tree ice cream base has some challenges too, but I prefer it over Dr Bombay as there’s no gritty quality.
