We have a brand new Recteq Backyard Beast. My spouse used it for the first time yesterday and I went into the backyard last night and noticed smoke coming out of the hopper, so I opened it and saw the black paint on the interior bubbling and peeling. Of course I was alarmed and this is after they cleaned it this morning. I’m freaking out because it seems like they damaged it pretty bad. What happened? I am very new to this so please take that into consideration!

    We Need Your Help!

We’ve noticed that recent changes in Reddit’s algorithms have made it harder for original content (OC) communities like ours to get the visibility we used to enjoy. This shift means that posts and comments aren’t getting the attention they deserve.

By voting on and commenting on posts, you’re not only helping others but also boosting the visibility of your own posts. Your engagement is crucial, not just for r/PelletGrills, but for all the wonderful niche communities like food, crafts, art, and culture that thrive on original content. Even a simple comment like “This would fit X sub” can make a big difference.

Together, we can support and uplift our entire community. Let’s keep the positive vibes and delicious smoked meat content flowing!

Contact recteq support. They are fantastic. You might need a new auger.

It looks to me like you had a back burn into the hopper. This is usually caused by a high heat shut down. I always let mine settle to the lowest temp before i actually put it in the shut down mode.

I’ve shut it down from FULL before without any issues. However, I started seeing smoke coming from my hopper once after shutting it down from FULL and it was getting heavier.

The 6 minute shutdown does not seem to be enough to put out the 700 degree fire sometimes. The fire will make its way into the auger, and the only fix is to turn the grill back on a relatively high heat and let it push the burning pellets into the fire pot.

Now, to err on the side of caution, I will only turn my grill off from 300 or lower. I will crank it down from the high heat cook and let it settle at 300 before starting the shutdown. I clean my fire pot after every cook, but those high heat cooks get wild.

  5. I love my reqteq but it’s definitely quick to catch fire. Even cleaning it regularly I have to be careful and watch it for at least an hour after I shut it down. I probably won’t buy another once this one goes.
