A lot of people know what they need to do(unfortunately a lot are ignorant to the basics of nutrition and the simple math of CICO as well), but it’s the will power/discipline that is the hard part. You need to make conscious and correct decisions all day every day.  That’s what makes it so difficult.

  2. chasingdivinity

Well to be fair, and I know this might catch some flak, but 1200 is really the bare minimum calories, and only a small group of people should follow it.

The majority of the population should eat more than 1200 in a day, even while losing weight. It’s possible you may be one of those people, and if so, 1200 calories will not be sustainable.

I love this subreddit for snack ideas and such, but I personally am following more 1800-2000 calories a day. Granted, I’m a pretty heavy male, so I’m definitely not in the group that can sustain on 1200 a day, but it’s important to first classify whether you should be actually trying to keep it to 1200.

Do a few weeks of 1500-1700 first to allow your appetite to adjust.

Eat at least 25g of protein with every meal.

Limit carbs to 1-2 servings per day.

Keep your sugar intake below 50g

Try to have 2-3 decent meals rather than a bunch of smaller meals and snacks.

Half your plate should be veggies (potatoes don’t count)

Find a zero cal herbal tea you like to sip on in the hour before your meals – way better for you than endless diet soda or energy drinks or black coffee

Give yourself 1-2 cheat meals per week. Plan them in advance, adjust your calories on the day (ie eat a smaller breakfast/lunch if it’s dinner) and allow yourself to enjoy the food without any guilt.

    You got this!

I don’t think anyone’s acting like it’s easy. It’s definitely a challenge for me and not a permanent life change I could make.
It is helpful to have a positive community here that is full of ideas and resources.

1200 isn’t for everyone. You should be basing your deficit off of your own individual needs and a realistic goal/expectation.

Plug your stats into tdeecalculator.net and see if 1200 works. I am 4’11” and I don’t even eat 1200, because it’s not my deficit at my activity level.

I eat usually around 1400 and I had half a bagel with cream cheese, steak and a fried egg this morning with a Fairlife protein shake. Lunch I had a Korean veggie pancake and ketchup. Dinner I’ll have red beans and rice. I have left over calories for a ninja creami recipe I’m testing. So there really is room to work on hunger if you focus on protein and fiber.

  6. kiitten113

I’m not strict with staying under 1200 but I joined this group because of the low calorie meal ideas. I don’t think 1200 is sustainable for most adults. I try to stay under 1600 and am losing weight.

  7. ughplss

It is hard. I almost always go over. But as long as I’m in a deficit I feel okay. The key is to not beat yourself up or force it. Ease into it. Try volume eating. Its super hard at first but when you get into it and see results it is rewarding! And its not meant to be a long term thing for most of us – its just to lose weight.

  8. Kind_Shop_2702

It’s not easy. If it was everyone would be in shape.

  9. PlayfulPerseph

It’s definitely not easy, even at a short height. For me going lower carb helps control hunger because it regulates your blood sugar. Try out a high protein, moderate fat, low carb diet! That is what makes 1200-1400 possible for me.

  10. glitterprncss

SAME!!!! imo, 1200 cals a day is not sustainable (for me! if it works for u congrats, pls dont remove my comment mods) i tried it last year. lost a shit ton of weight but slowly gained it back. i was 163 now im back to 205. maybe it works for other ppl but i feel like this life is too short to be worried about calories all the time. as long as your doctor/medical professional says that you’re in good health, eat the chipotle/crumbl!!! u are beautiful inside & out

  11. Persistent-headache

I’ve been doing it for months and only now am I not feeling it so much.

If you’re struggling I’d recommend figuring out what your normal calorie intake is and slowly work on reducing it bit by bit. Going from over eating to 1200 is brutal and quite frankly,  unnecessary.

  12. DataOver544

Like someone else said, try an adjustment period of higher 1500-1700 or something. Then the 1200 may not feel so bad. If it feels awful, then it’s not right., IMO.

  13. Pycharming

So others have made good points about TDEE and how not everyone here even should eat 1200. I agree and suggest looking at your physical needs.

However I also want to add that there’s a huge mental component. What you’re describing sound like binges, which are largely emotional. Not diagnosing you, but it’s important to remember that binge eating disorder is characterized by a pattern of RESTRICTION followed by BINGES. Treatment almost involves reducing attempts at restriction.

Again I don’t know if you qualify for BED, it’s just a good example of how some people can overeat because they were under eating. Not to mention that over restriction can have physical changes that prevent you from feeling full and generally mess with your metabolism.

In short, consider not aiming for 1200 and more importantly focus on emotional regulation because if you keep feeling like you are less strong than the people who eat less, you might end up eating more to as a way of making yourself feel better. You may find looking at calories at all is not helpful. I personally don’t count, it’s just added stress, but I use this sub for meal and snack ideas and have lost 10 lbs so far.

  14. Puzzleheaded_Time719

Remember it’s reddit and a lot of people lie so they can feel like the belong to a community. I am definitely not a 1200 a day person but I do like the snack ideas. Some people seem to have an ED on here though.

    How it feels

  16. ExistentialRap

Just gotta find foods that fill you up like crazy with low calories.

Try potatoes with cottage cheese. Cheat code af. Just find your crutches. 🩼

  17. lilliesandlilacs

How tall are you? Unless you’re v petite you probably need more calories. Eat more protein and fiber boo!

  18. Animajax

It’s not easy. But I recommend learning to make high volume / low calorie foods. Check out r/volumeeating

  19. alibratt

Spoilers: it’s not, the positivity and encouragement helps though.

You’ve got to build the habit in the first place. From there it’s consistency.

Find alternatives to the junk food. If I want ice cream I eat frozen berries. I want soda? I’m either getting tea or Dr Pepper zero. If I want cake I’ll have zero sugar pudding instead.

Food prep and portion out everything when you do. I’ve probably got 25 low carb/low fat burritos in my freezer sitting right next to my 20 pre portioned servings of Chili, cauliflower rice and spaghetti squash. Having a bunch of options I can just conveniently throw into the microwave helps me stop the temptation of eating out.

But all the advice in the world will not help if you’re restricting yourself to the point of binging later down the line.1200 calories a day is not for everyone. You may be one of those people. I’d gradually increase your intake until it’s something that feels more sustainable.

  20. cosmicflamexo

it’s not easy but it gets easier. your appetite decreases when your body gets used to eating small.

  21. reeneebob

I know, right! I love always having hunger pangs!

If 1200 is necessary for your weight loss and you want to eat more, burn more. Walk more, do more cardio. Simple as that

  24. HotelSquirrel

I failed so many diets, so many times I’d go to the grocery store and buy all healthy food and then a week later just be right back to my usual diet.

The thing is, each time I failed I picked up some good habits. Maybe instead of doritos I started buying pita chips and hummus. Or maybe instead of white rice I started using brown rice or quinoa. Maybe I’m eating yogurt instead of ice cream, or frozen grapes instead of candy.

Don’t beat yourself up when you mess up. Just think about what you liked, what can you incorporate into your diet moving forward. That’s what it’s all about, moving forward and making positive changes over time.

  25. cicozizzle

Hey if it’s actually this hard you don’t have to do 1200! What’s your TDEE

  26. bleachedveins

In my mind a switch just flips i’m not sure how to explain it but i’m not sure my mindset is entirely healthy either. I’m not getting the nutrition i need rn so i have to supplement with meal drinks to make sure i get enough calories. before this i was heavily overeating for about 2 years

  27. Visible-Trust7797

Like other have said, I actually eat closer to 1400. One day a week at 1800. I was eating very little before though, so my portions tend to be smaller but I do huge veggie portions if that’s available. I eat a lot of oatmeal and apples too. I think it helps that while I’m not vegan or vegetarian, I don’t eat a lot of meat or dairy.

  28. Minniechicco6

Like all things it takes time to change your mindset 💕

  29. CatKnitHat

SO LISTEN. When your digests foods it release chemicals that make you happy.

SO are you the kind of person that NEEDS something to make you happy? To me, in a way it’s like taking drugs. I NEED this to make me happy. I NEED this to make me feel better.

Is this true? Is that the person you want to be, or are you stronger than this?

Your body does adjust to less food. Although depending on who you are , you might need more than 1,200 calories.

Do stuff that distracts yourself from food.
Don’t think about food. Concentrate on eating when you are hungry, not when you are craving.

And no there is NOTHING wrong with eating this food, here and there. AND there is nothing wrong with eating a big breakfast, lunch, or dinner. AND you can enjoy your food.

But right now, you are trying to lose weight. You are trying to get healthy. You can have that stuff when you are done!

Oh also if you fall off the bike, get back on. Like if a kid falls of a bike you don’t yell at him and tell him that he will never ride a bike again. Don’t quit. Just try again.

    Edit: You got this. 😊

  30. AHH-bbyshark

Because most people in this sub have eating disorders

  31. jexasaurus

Tbh the only way it’s ever been possible for me is with keto.

  32. Scribbles138

It’s not easy. It’s a struggle when you’re constantly planning what you can or can’t eat, meal planning and prep can be fatiguing…I think it gets *easier,* but I don’t think it’s ever easy.

People who post their **super filling, super satisfying** meals of 150 (or fewer) calories are full of it, and honestly, I don’t think they stick to this long-term. It’s a lifestyle change, not a diet, and it takes time to change habits and unlearn years of eating behaviours.

Look forward to your next meal…plan things you genuinely enjoy eating so that you want your next meal or snack. Figure out ways to incorporate your favourites on a regular basis. I’m not the kind of person who plans “cheat days/meals” because I find it too difficult to go right back to stricter eating afterwards. I would rather be consistent and have things that might not be the healthiest within my day so that I don’t feel like I’m depriving myself.

You will find what works for you, just be patient with yourself.

  33. DirtybutCuteFerret

Personally i love the taste of salads (especially baby spinach) and hard boiled eggs and chicken and it definitley takes a while to shrink your stomach. It is also about mindfucking yourself into loving what your eating. Also eat very slow and drink alot of water while it or before it.
Plus in general you can eat anything within your calorie range but you prolly need to reset your taste buds and shrink your stomach first.

Also, try intermitted fasting or carnivore diet (no calorie limit) if 1200 calories is not your thing !

  34. jp712345

no one eats acurraely. REAL 1200 will amke you feel like shit. ppl w=here who colaim eating 1200 just unconciosuly eat 1600 in truth, they donttrack everyhitng
