My brother-in-law bought this during Covid. He said he used it like 3 times and realized that he just doesn't have the patience for smoking food/meat. He knows I have the patience for it, so I got a friend to help me move it.
I guess this is the Recteq RT-700. I don't have a whole helluva lot of experience with smokers or the process. Any advice? Can this do grilling as well or is that not recommended?

Pellet smokers are basically smoky ovens. So you cook what you’d normally cook in an oven, but want a smoky flavor.
Speaking of which, pellet grills don’t give as much smoky flavor as charcoal or offsets, so to maximize smoke people often start the cooks real low, like 185 to maximize the smoke flavor.
The heat comes up from the bottom, so people often put big meat fat side down to protect from the heat source.
I don’t believe that model has a direct heat option. But I found that most direct heat options aren’t great, or at least don’t replicate a real grill b/c the firepot is only like 4″ across so the direct heat area is really small.
That’s a nice pellet smoker. Recteq makes a good product. Just scrape it down and do a good burn out at 350 for a few hours. Lightly oil the inside and season it in. Then YouTube “cooking on Recteq 700” I’m sure will have plenty of vids to check out. Invest in good leave in dual probe thermometer.
Complements, that’s a hell of a smoker!
Yes it can grill as well. I might catch flak but I wouldn’t recommend it though. In my mind, A charcoal or propane grill will sear and grill better and more efficiently than any pellet smoker. I’ve always had another grill besides my smoker though so it’s a nice luxury to use them in tandem.
Reverse searing is great though if you can do that, it’s a whole nother rabbit hole to go down.
Good luck with the new smoker, you’re gonna love it!
The best thing my BIL ever gave me was a look of sympathy when my sister started talking politics
