Don’t get me wrong, it was good, but didn’t compare the first one I had in NYC. Maybe that first one was just a fluke. I remember the beef being more flavourful, and the patties were crunchy on the outside but still tender on the inside. These ones were a bit drier and slightly tougher. Overall, as a franchise, I think Five Guys is possibly better? I’ve had better and worse burgers there , but never felt crushing disappointment. This Shake Shack burger was even a tier below Burgers Priest (when it first opened).
I was so excited for one to open in Toronto, I guess I built up my expectations too high. It reminds me of a short story I read long ago called Autumn Mountain, about a traveller who sees the most beautiful painting he’s ever seen in his life and spends years and years trying to track it down so he can see it again. He finally finds it, and it’s beautiful, but not as beautiful as he remembered. He keeps telling himself that it’s not quite the same painting or is a clever forgery despite the owner of the painting insisting that it’s the real Autumn Mountain.
