For me, vine ripened always taste better. My other half thought I could not tell the difference in a blind test. However, many cannot because their taste buds get over swamped by the sugars – similar to the Coke vs Pepsi challenge.

I hear from very reliable sources like Craig LeHouillier for example, that tomatoes picked at the peak of freshness off the vine are indistinguishable from tomatoes that finish ripening on the counter.
I’m lucky to not have pest issues ruining my ripening tomatoes. But those who do really benefit by harvesting when they’re blushing. I do from time to time have splitting issues after a big storm. So good to know there’s an option!
