Why is my Carlina Reaper dying next to a healthy Jalapeño and Ghost pepper?

What is the soil moisture like? I don’t know why this would be the case if all 3 plants are watered the same, but that plant looks really dry. If it was me, I’d give it a good bottom watering and see if it came back. The surface of the soil looks like it might be a little lighter (more dry?) than the plant to the left? The soil ‘might’ have become hydrophobic if it got too dry in the past. If that’s the case, then the water just tends to drain down the sides and out the bottom if you water from the top.

How moist does the soil feel if you stick a finger down a few inches?

Edited to add: Maybe also give it a little shade until it recovers?

The drainage holes in the pot doing what they’re supposed to? Also, Ive had sudden death from plants due to root pests before too

Water might not be soaking into the dirt and instead just flowing out the bottom of your pot

Because it has both the smallest pot and the largest drainage holes. Put a drainage pan under it so it has time to retain some water or just make sure it gets a good soak somehow. Then consider putting it in a larger pot with more soil to hold more moister longer. Also, you can water the soil when the sun isn’t out so the plant has time to rehydrate

That MF looks more thirsty then a 45 year olds tinder profile.

She looks thirsty af, or the roots are drowning. Are you able to see water drain when you water? Make sure she has holes at the bottom, drill some holes if not and check them roots or she will die soon

I grow mine in pots, I water it everyday around evening, you can also do it in the morning, and I also put a layer of mulch on top of the soil, it will keep the soil cooler, and keep it from drying out as fast.

Mine did that from the heat we had here a few weeks ago. I put mine in partial shade & mulched it. Did the trick.

The drainage / soil / pot size situation is not ideal. Too much drainage? Peps and leaves are Not getting enough water!

Aside from everything else that folks have said… The biggest difference I see is that it’s in a black pot. Black will absorb more heat throughout the day, meaning it’ll probably be thirstier in general because the water evaporates faster.

Also, IME, superhots put on SO many pods at once compared to less spicy peppers; if that’s the case with yours, that also means it’ll need more water/nutrients because it’s producing more fruit. Good luck getting it to perk back up!

Are the leaves crunchy or soggy/floppy?

  12. Unlucky-tracer

More dirt. More roots. More water

  13. poopmangler

Yeah, that looks severely under watered

  14. Jolly-Growth-1580

For now maybe put it into a bucket of water so it can fully soak up as much water as possible before it goes past the point of no return. Then up pot it and add a drainage tray for future.

Those are gonna be hot af is you’ve been stressing them like this. These ain’t dying, just thirsty

For a plant that size it needs more soil and space to sustain its size. It looks very dry and like others have said it needs water. Possibly root bound in that small pot. The rule i go by for pepper and tomato plants is minimum size of container has to be 5 gallons if you plant on growing a decent sized plant.

  17. Parking-Pineapple474

Different plants need Different watering, dosent matter if there planted same time. Never water on a shedual, especially in pots! One plants could have more roots hence drinking more. Pots, location all play parts as well.

  18. lupulinchem

If you’ve been watering, the roots are in trouble.

  19. Ramo2653

Assuming you’ve been watering it, it might be grubs that got to the roots.

Dang, that drought stress on reapers… gonna ‘ghost somebody for sure. Water that sucker and then put some ice cubes on top of the soil to melt slowly and help rehydrate the soil so it wont channel all the water thru. Could also blend some fresh aloe if u have any on hand in a gallon of water and water that in. It helps a lot when your soil gets hydrophobic.

  21. well-past-worn

Look how much darker that pot is compared to the others. Paint that sucker white or something.

  22. triip256

looks like the shishito i killed with fertilizer.

  23. New pot, much smaller holes, better soil, peat moss, check your soil acidity. PH should be lower than neutral, around 6.5-7 max.

  24. CapnSaysin

The fact that it’s next to your other plants has nothing to do with it. Could be something to do with your soil or a pest or disease, or simply just need some water.

  25. halfbeerhalfhuman

Its either under or over watered. Check the soil wetness by sticking your finger in it about 2 knuckles deep. Good luck. Doesnt look good. Probably will lose all the leaves and fruit.

  26. Secretweaver_

How much sun do they get? Last year I had my plants in full sun and they were struggling. Moved them to a spot that’s a bit shadier most of the day and they thrived.

  27. Elegant_Height_1418

🤣🤣 all these ppl need to stop growing plants if they don’t know what wilted leaves are from… water the plant( but it could be from over watering or root rot

  28. paul1032xx

Bro water the thing, surprised it hasn’t fallen over

  29. You have a lawn to put these in but choose to keep them in pots? If it’s due to wanting to keep year after year you can just put in pot for the winter..
