Anova is now requiring a subscription to use their app
First, they announced that they're going to discontinue support for the original sous vide device and now this.

Glad I bought a sous vide that doesn’t require a pointless app
chris_ro
Well I have an account older than the deadline. I have a cooker paired with the app. But I have no more access to the app. Support said something like log out and log in again. But doesn’t work. Fuck you Anova.

This should be in r/enshittification.

I guess I’m grandfathered in, but I never use the app for my cooks.

The note at the bottom is key. “We are getting too much heat for this now, wait a couple months, then you will have to pay”
josherman61791
Anyone have a different brand recommendation for my next sous vide device?
will_you_suck_my_ass
Fuck that noise

Now we know why the old models are losing app support. It’s not because they couldn’t maintain the old app, it’s because it wouldn’t support the new subscription model. I bought my first and last Anova product and can’t wait to get a Joule.

I have a different brand but if I ever upgrade this is putting me off. I generally do not need remote connectivity but locking it behind a paywall feels like they are squeezing their customers.

This doesn’t apply to me…. But it’s still absolutely anti-consumer. This benefits no one except the company, and even then I’d say they’re worse off because of this.
If you google “best Sous vide cooker” Anova was bound to show up. Now it will always come with *mobile functionality locked behind paywall. What a goof. Were they acquired by EA? Lol
MakeoutPoint
This subreddit had better treat anyone who purchases and subscribes to anova with extreme contempt.
Now, how do we go about hacking and open-sourcing this shit?
Hockeyfan_52
Jokes on them. I use the joule app.
casingpoint
I guess I am grandfathered. Doesn’t matter. Anova will not be my next purchase.
bhambrewer
Welp, never buying anything from Anova then.
WarpGremlin
Well, I was gonna buy an Anova. Not anymore.

This is all really annoying. I had an OG Joule (ChefSteps kind before Breville). It lasted me 8 glorious years before it finally went kaput. My parents gave me their Anova because they rarely use it. After all the bullshit Anova is pulling I don’t plan to ever purchase from them. Once the Anova one stops working, I’ll go back to Joule or the latest and greatest option that isn’t Anova.
Melodic-You1896
One less app on my phone.
andre613
I’ve never used the app nor will I ever… who the hell needs an app to keep water warm and circulating?!?
tinfoil_panties
I bought an Anova specifically because I was sick of being forced to use an app for my joule (and it would fail randomly and ruin my food). I’ve never used an app for the Anova, is this a new thing?
rumple4skn
There’s a new version of the app launched in the Apple Store a couple days ago. Everyone go leave trash reviews now. Bring down that rating on customer facing reviews AT DOWNLOAD. Fuck these losers.

As a partner in a software company I’m somewhat sympathetic, but honestly, this is a pretty basic app that augments their hardware product. It’s fine for what it is, but I can’t imagine they spend a ton of money on maintaining it. “New features” – big deal. I’ve used it maybe 2 times in the 4 years I have had my Anova. I don’t need to monitor the temp. I know the cook time. Recipes? I get all the SV recipes I can shake a stick at online.
If they want to sell their very nice machines, they should just give this away. They will walk this back I’m sure.
Ultimate_Mango
It’s ready shady and makes me regret using their half off deal to replace a very old OG Anova.
one_night_on_mars
Maybe I’m missing something… But the app is really only there to control the sous vide from your phone? Like, I’ve browsed the receipes but i always end up googling what i need.
Or is there more to the app?
TheJewPear
I’m so glad I bought an Inkbird and not this shit.
