What’s our current take on Big Block quality? I find myself getting it about 3 out of 4 times, have also liked Jealous Devil. Just opened this one and it’s full of tiny pieces and lots of powder…

That’s been my outcome as well. Unless it’s Jealous Devil lump, I stay with briquettes. Way more uniform

lol, yeah I gave up on kj coal. Even regular FOGO, I’ve had issues with. My most consistent best charcoal for price is B&B competition big block. It’s still not that expensive and generally has bigger pieces.

Relatively new owner here — have had my BJ3 about a month. So far, have gone through 2x KJ Big Block and 2.5 Fogo Super Premium, so still a small sample size, but I got larger lumps from the KJ bags. Fogo have been pretty small and dusty.
Really hard to say which is better in the long run, since it could be the people delivering or stocking the shelves being too rough.

Big Block turned to trash like a year and half ago. Every bag now is full of small pieces and like 2 inches of dust at the bottom. I also noticed a different taste last year. I switched to jealous devil and am very happy with it.

I went through about 4 bags of Fogo and it’s the same towards the bottom. Quality is poor and it’s small chips
Just bought some Chunx Xl Lump and I have to say right off the bat there are some massive pieces. Largest I’ve ever seen. Hopefully bottom of the bad is good.
Have tried the Big Green Egg brand too and it was average

Yes, there are some brands that typically have larger lump size than others. Good examples are KJ Big Block and Jealous Devil. However, in my experience, it is less about the brand of lump and more about how the bag was handled during storage and shipping. I never order online. I go to the store and look for bags, preferably still on the pallet. I see if they are still in the general shape they were when on the pallet. Do they have any creases or does the bag look handled. If so, I pass.
As my proof, I previously ordered bags of KJ and JD online and had some from both brands be extremely small pieces. Any time I buy them from a store and am choosy over which bag I select, I always end up with large pieces.

Depends on the store for me. I find that real BBQ stores treat the bags more carefully than big box stores, and I find the prices are much larger as a result (less broken chunks).

Yea sad to see it. My last two bags of “big block” were 50% crumbs. They won’t be getting any more of my money. Went Fogo.
