Probably the most beautiful tomatoes I’ve ever grown. Sadly, also the most flavorless.

Yes I’m always surprised by the strong focus on appearance. Does anyone actually care more about looks than taste? Unless you’re growing for some kind of competition that is just about appearance I don’t get the logic.

I guess it’s just a much more objective characteristic that sellers can promote, and if you’re new to growing it’s exciting to grow something that doesn’t look like your standard supermarket tomato. But personally I don’t care if it looks like a cat’s arse if it tastes great.

I think my Black Krim are beautiful and they taste good. They did well in Minnesota (5a) this year. We were flooded most of the year so I only had to water them twice.

I grew Sart Roloise this year for the first time. Gorgeous tomatoes, but not exactly flavor bombs. The flavor wasn’t offensive, but muted, washed out. Most my other tomatoes that are typically outstanding were in fact outstanding so it wasn’t a case of the bad year for tomatoes. The tomatoes in the photo may not be Sart Roloise as there are so many similar looking new crosses with the anthocyanin gene.

I’m becoming wary about these recent crosses that might look amazing, but aren’t so great to eat. I’ve grown a couple of the tomato varieties rather recently developed and didn’t like either one to eat. Pretty looks, yes, but extra tough and thick skin in one case and an off putting crunchiness in another. I like a crunchy cucumber, but not a crunchy tomato. Thick tomato skins aren’t so great either.

At least for the foreseeable future, I’ll probably keep on growing a few of the wow in the looks department tomatoes with the hope they might taste as good as they look, but I will always have some of the tried and true superb tasting heirloom tomatoes growing alongside the fancy looking new ones.

I won’t plant anything with any black in it as they all seem utterly tasteless
