The fishermen on Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco used to take all of the shellfish (crabs, clams, shrimp, mussels, scallops and the like that the fish mongers and markets wouldn’t buy from them and cook it all up in a hearty soup with vegetables and spices, in a giant pot down on the docks. So every boat that came in would add their cast-offs into the pot and they would all have something hot and filling to eat at then of the day.
They called it Cioppino. It’s one of the best dishes around. If you go to San Francisco, go to either The Grotto No. 9, Tarantino’s or Alliotto’s and order it.
