Take a look at this allergenic business card we received today during dinner service.

  1. Hand that back and letthem know where the nearest McDonald’s is located

  2. chefjay71

If you have that many issues, your choice is plain salad or eat at home. 🤷

  3. meatsntreats

Nope. I take allergies very seriously and accommodate as best I can but when you say all and all are bad but a little is ok it’s game over.

  4. Apparently they had a lot of compliments for us on accommodating their allergies. We literally didn’t do anything other than change gloves and sanitize things. I told my boss, “I took a picture of it so I could make fun of them online.”

  5. boneologist

The “(some flavour is OK)”, and “no artificial sweeteners” lets you know it’s legit. Serve them a pure grain alcohol and rain water.

  6. hitbluntsandfliponce

My dumbass googled pink pepper because I didn’t realize they meant pepperCORN.

  7. Sanquinity

No pepper of any kind because of “severe allergy”, yet small amounts of black pepper is fine…? What?

  8. amaranthusrowan

Botanist here -weird because black pepper (Family Piperaceae) and chili pepper (Fmily Solonaceae) are not botanically closely related and wouldn’t be expected to have the same allergens.

  9. ThatAssholeMrWhite

kind of a strange coincidence to be allergic to both peppers and peppercorns when THEY’RE NOT BIOLOGICALLY RELATED AT ALL

  10. mynameisnotsparta

    **Sorry we cannot accommodate you.**

Bell peppers and peppercorns? They are totally different plants.

So no cucumbers either? (Pickles)And what in the ‘salad dressing’ is this allergy?

  11. bollocksgrenade

Black, white and green peppercorns are the exact same berry. The black and green peppercorns are both underripe, but processed differently, while the white ones are ripe with the outer husk removed. There is no way you could be ok with a little black pepper but a reaction to white and green peppercorns. It’s either a psychosomatic reaction or they just have an aversion.

  12. BirraNulu1

I know someone who can’t do any type of capsicum.. one drop of hot sauce, and he is twisted gut and liquid out of every orfice… no issues with peppercorns.

  13. Illustrious-Back8174

My theory on this is – yes I’m sure they have maybe one? Allergy? and if they’re to the point they have to write a note, and it’s been accommodated in the past they feel the okay to add the other *preferances* because they know they have the eyes of the chef.

I definitely think it got worse since covid because where I’m from if you just said the magic words ‘I’m exempt’ you didn’t have to wear a face mask and so about 60% of the ‘exempt’ people were the type for wandering about and coughing and spluttering on people, and having a go at people who were about wearing a mask and overall most demanding, nippy, energy consuming customers.

Same energy as “yes my ferret can come in and must sit at the table because they are my ’emotional support’ ferret/ <insert poor animal here>”

Legit not the same as a seeing-eye dog.

  14. EnteringMultiverse

Sorry but due to your extensive, severe allergies and the risk of cross-contamination in our kitchen, we are not able to serve you tonight

  15. tastepdad

Hard no for me , can’t shut down the whole kitchen to sanitize every utensil and surface

  16. PurBldPrincess

Had a similar customer a couple weeks ago. All sorts of peppers and onions. They came to the worst place as soon as many of our dishes have peppers and onions or are seasoned with spices that contain either peppers or onions. We eventually worked something out and I heard no stories of someone who had a reaction, so I assume it went well.

  17. DachdeckerDino

If it‘s that severe, maybe you shouldn‘t eat out.

  18. Orchid_Significant

Chili peppers and black/white pepper are **not** related so this makes sense.

I don’t know what pink pepper (cashew family), pickles and artificial sweeteners have to do with it though.

  19. Beelzebubbbbles

That’s when I have the waiter apologize and tell the guest that we won’t be able to accommodate them this evening.

  20. FOH, here: How did that even end up in your kitchen? A guest with such allergies that anything containing “spices” and trace amounts of any kind of bell pepper or chili can cause a severe reaction should already have been filtered out by service on the grounds of “Neither me, nor our kitchen staff will risk your life with inevitable cross contamination”.

  21. eyoung629

Someone handed me (server) one of these a few years back. They said it was a capsicum allergy and theirs also said no black pepper. Weird as pepper doesn’t have capsicum to my knowledge. Makes me think they were a card carrying, certified weenie.

  22. CraniumEggs

All peppercorn, even pink peppercorn? It’s a berry related to cashews. Also a little BP being ok is not a severe allergy especially when it’s followed by tiny amounts cause reactions. This person doesn’t know their allergies very well.

  23. kingftheeyesores

I have rosacea and get bad flair ups from potato starch, potato peels and some fried potatoes, but not mashed. It won’t kill me so I usually don’t mention it but honestly that’s mostly because I don’t know how to properly convey that it’s not an allergy, cross contamination is fine so no cleaning is necessary but I can’t have those specific items.

  24. jpbrowneyes

Op did you tell him where black pepper comes from ?

  25. Rach_CrackYourBible

As someone with diagnosed Celiac disease AND who actually follows my doctor’s treatment plan of no gluten ever, I legitimately hate these types of people.

Celiac disease isn’t an allergy, it’s an autoimmune disease, so I will have intestinal damage, not anaphylaxis. I HATE people who claim to be gluten-free or Celiac but “don’t have to worry about cross contamination” (or all the hidden sources of gluten like soy sauce.)

These people make it impossible for people with actual medical needs to be taken seriously when they’re making up fake allergies because they go to a crystal healer shaman instead of an allergist or gastrointerologist.

I’m not always at home and don’t always have a hotel room with a kitchen to cook in. I have to have safe places to eat and these people make it impossible for the rest of us.

  26. I see this one everynow and then. For some reason Peppercorn and Peppers are always paired together; don’t know if there is a real medical reason or not but in 20 years, i’ve seen it at least 5 times.
Pickles makes sense too since many use peppers in the brine. Pickling Spice usually contains chili.
Just do whatever you can to accomodate.
I’ve had a couple allergy mishaps in my career.

Apples: The BBQ sauce had Apply Cider Vinegar. Lady Lips swelled up a bit but was fine after a Benadryl.

Pinenuts: The granola had pinenuts and the server never relayed it to the person who actually made it, just asked the sous who did not know or double check.

  27. retired-at-34

Damn. I would turn them away. I cannot guarantee this person’s safety while dining in my restaurant.

  28. Veflas510

Did you serve them? That would be an immediate ‘sorry we can’t accommodate you’ from me.

  29. Hamilton-Beckett

I would send the card back and say “unfortunately our kitchen is not able to accommodate your needs as we cannot guarantee safely that your food will not come into contact with the items on your list.”

  30. kapaipiekai

I know someone who claimed to be ultra allergic to anything hot. I assumed it was typical hypochondriac nonsense and that they just had a bland palette. One day I made them a massive ham and salad sandwich with the thinnest layer of ultra mild American mustard. They got one bite in and started shrieking. Ran their mouth under the tap for 15 minutes, lips and mouth were massively inflamed. I went “…………… huh”.

  31. InadmissibleHug

A lil black pepper is ok? But severely allergic to all peppercorns?

    Get oudda here!

  32. topgamer7

I can’t eat peppers or Chilis. But peppercorn of any kind is fine.

This person just doesn’t like spice.

I don’t die. But I get hella bloated and constipated/diarrhea. Boy do I miss spicy food.

  33. Optimal-Business-786

A little while back I was handed a pretty official looking medical card. Creditcard sized anf metrial, they were either from the UK or US; are there any official cards out there?

Anyway, it said that even a trace of peanuts could cause a deadly reaction, so I told her we could not serve her. We use peanuts in many things and even if its not an ingredient, there will likely be traces.

She said oh no a little is fine, I just cant eat like a whole bowl of them. I told her that since her medical card told me she might die if she ate here, we would not be serving her.

    She the got upset.

  34. If we’re willing to assume they’re being honest, they should at least split this up by severity. The blob of text is a little difficult to read and putting “small amount from cooking surfaces are deadly” right in the middle of things where “a little is okay” is just asking for someone to make a mistake.

But of course I think we all know this is probably just someone with an astoundingly low spice tolerance, so it doesn’t matter.

  35. Puzzleheaded_Nail556

So basically this is a list of things this person doesn’t like….

  36. LOST_GEIST

I had someone like this, I told them I’m not comfortable serving them because I can’t guarantee their allergies can be avoided and then it became an argument of “oh it’s actually not that bad, I can eat a small amount”.

  37. BlackwolfNy718

I wouldn’t serve this person. With a list like that you’d be asking for trouble.
