I was inspired by a TV program with Sergio Herman (3 star chef) in which he eats bread in Iceland that is cooked in a milk carton in a warm pit. In the Netherlands we have a local specialty: Frisian Rye Bread. After some research on the web, I came up with a recipe with this result. It really tastes great. A delicious moist bread

300 grams of rye grains soaked for 1 night in plenty of water
200 grams of oat flakes soaked for 1 night in plenty of water
2 tablespoons of syrup
100 grams of flour
1 tablespoon malt
100 ml of water
6 grams of salt
Drain rye and oats
Mix with 100 ml water, salt, flour and syrup into a sticky dough. Pour this into a milk carton, cover with aluminum foil and place in the oven for 8 hours at 100 degrees C (convection mode). Let cool in the oven after 8 hours.
Rye bread is a nutritious choice, high in fiber, vitamins, and minerals, which supports digestion, heart health, and blood sugar control. Its lower glycemic index and rich antioxidant content make it a healthy option, though it contains gluten and is denser than other breads.
Where’s the money shot
Milk cartons have a plastic film on the inside though…
Milk cartons are lined with plastic. I wouldn’t do that again. Although it looks good.
Thanks for sharing this
Please do not eat this bread. It looks delicious but there is a 100% chance chemicals and microplastics from the plastic lining of the milk carton have leached into the bread. Those are forever chemicals.
Did the milk carton say it was oven safe on it? You are lucky you didn’t burn your kitchen down! Cardboard is flammable! Not to mention the coating on the inside of the carton which is now in your bread.
And it tasted ok? Are the milk cartons there ok to do that in?
This is awesome! Most commenters have plastic PVC plumbing in their kitchens.
In times past this would have been no problem, milk cartons were paper with a wax lining.
That wax has now been replaced with a lining of polyethylene. Makes for longer shelf times on the milk, but as a result this is no longer a safe cooking method.
