I use a tumbler with a lid and shake it, first with hot tap water and then after adding the room temp water. I took your advice and only put out half amount during the hot season. Thanks for making it so easy!

I have a problem with the plastic birdfeeders from $Tree & Walmart. Where I live has been in the 100βs & high 90βs this June July & August. I think theyβre melting. Itβs not a visible melt. Itβs on the bottom of the feeder so the sugar water seeps out onto the patio, which could really attract a lot of ants if I donβt catch it. Any suggestions? Iβm thinking I need a non-plastic feeder such as glass or metal. What do you think?

Same recipe my Uncle Lou told me to use about 40 years ago. I still use it today. I've never used any store bought with that red dye in it, which can be harmful to the hummers. My uncle told me they don't need the red dye….just use the sugar water.ππΊπΈπ

Oh GREAT because you are now feeding all those birds with NON Nutritional water and getting filled up with that They are not getting nutritional liquids from flowers !
Just to add, if you are making more than 1 cup, ie making extra to store in fridge, I make 1 cup at a time to ensure the sugar fully dissolves. Sometimes when adding large batch to fridge you will see particles of sugar that hadn't quite dissolve yet

I have been experimenting and it seems to me that a 1 in 3 ratio (25% sugar) is more pleasing to the birds. I base this solely on how many times they dip their beaks into the mixture; this is completely unscientific I know. I don't have thousands of birds in my garden so a side by side comparison wouldn't really work. I also never leave the mixture out past a day; always wash and clean the feeder. This might be overkill but I don't want to harm my little friends.
Iβm using an organic cane sugar from Kirkland, Costco, itβs unrefined and I hope that that is safe for them. Itβs all I have right now unless I go buy something differentβ¦any thoughts?
