Welcome! Yes, caramelized onions do take a long time, but so well worth the wait.

    Cheers!

Personally, I’ve never been able to caramelize onions properly in a nonstick pan, but they turn out great in stainless steel. I’m not one of those anti-nonstick snobs, it absolutely has a place in my kitchen, but the right tool for the job and all. I hope they turn out well for you, but if they don’t, it’s probably the tool and not you.

If you want to speed up the process, add some water into the pan and put a lid on it to get the onions translucent. Then take off the lid, let the water evaporate and add your fat of choice.

They’re so worth it, last summer I spent an entire day caramelizing a ton of onions. Frozen them in portions and they lasted months.

Don’t be upset when there’s about one spoonful of onions when you’re done here.

Red onions are great, but I would highly recommend you try yellow or Spanish onions next time. They have an amazing flavor profile.

Water helps speed it up, but I have just switched to caramelizing in the oven! So much easier and I don’t have to fuss over it or watch it.

Save some of these in the freezer. Come Thanksgiving have a turkey quesadilla with them and top it with balsamic glaze.
