I bake things all the time and bring them to work. My coworker asked me to make her birthday cake. I am going to do a 6in cake. It’s vegan pistachio SMBC, blackberry filling and coconut cake. I’ve never charged for any of my cakes. I almost feel like giving it away but I also am really going out of my way to make it as I am leaving early the next day to catch a flight.

Vegan pistachio? At least 100. The ingredients and decorations alone are almost half that. Btw. Beautiful cake.
Vegan is a speciality cake so charge more! Please don’t get walked over by doing things for free, if someone appreciates your work they will pay for it!
Free things always go unrequited. I’ve done quite a few ‘free’ cakes and food that ends up not being taken care of, because it was free. If someone pays, they’ll take care of it.
But to the point of charging: cost of ingredients, + at the very least charge minimum wage for your time.
Ingredients should *always* be covered by the other party. Otherwise you’re not making it for free, you’re paying out of pocket on top of your time, effort, and stress.
Charge for the cost of the ingredients + what you make hourly at work. It’s the easiest formula.
When I’ve made cakes for sale, I mark ingredients up by 10%. Mainly because what I actually will use will vary from what I quoted on the design. And I never want to bake feeling restricted – the idea that changing things up for the better will lead me to a loss.
Do it for the cake.
So: (ingredients × 1.1) + hourly rate
So pretty. Well done.
