Didn’t eat because it wigged me out but curious about why and how it looks like this. Bought fresh from my local green grocer. Was it ok to eat?

I always wonder what causes this, is the rot oxidation? or is it sprouting because that’s just what they do? (I don’t know much about onions beside yum)
