So I took the popular advice for round 2. I buttered the toast and melted quality cheddar I shredded on it. I mixed some black pepper and a bit of Worster into the beans.

The cheese, pepper, and sauce definitely give it more complex flavors. It really is quite lovely.
I had the wife try it. Her pronouncement? “It’s good.”
So I says to her, I says “Love, you really want to tell a bunch of Brits their national treasure is just ‘good’?” So she followed up with “Its very good.” 😂

You’ll start to wake up thinking about tea and accidentally start calling people guv’ner. Your transformation is inevitable once the virus has taken hold, there is no cure.

  2. nigeltheworm

This is totally what the internet is for. Fine job, op! I hope that’s tea in the monkeymug?

  3. CountZodiac

    ‘Really is quite lovely’

You’re even sounding like us too.

  4. ok_not_badform

Mate, spot on. I do like a squirt of HP Brown Sauce right in the middle of mine or some grated cheddar cheese on top.

  5. ReepDaggle01

Fair play mate, very authentic and I’m just off to make the very same thing. Swapped out tea for several bottles of Stella but kudos on the mug👍

  6. K1ng0fThePotatoes

Next, try beans and sausages. Next level stuff.

  7. AlternativePrior9559

Yay!!!! Love you got the Worcester sauce OP😉 We need to tighten up a little on the teabags but another time.

    Appreciate you

  8. Individual_Milk4559

It’s popular, but not our national dish, that’d be either a roast, a fry up, or fish n chips

  9. Antique_Caramel_5525

Controversial, but I make it exactly the same as you with a little pinch of chilli flakes over the top

  10. Cheese on top of the beans rather than underneath, although I’ve seen some maniacs on here do both.

  11. Galaxy-High

Uplevel this with a sprinkle of Red Leicester cheese and pepper.

  12. StandardBanger

So seriously sharp cheddar is basically extra mature?

Beans and cheese on toast… or ‘Cheesybeans on toast’ is an absolute fav and my 2 daughters loved it when they were younger and still do. One of the variants I like is chopped up fresh tomatoes in the beans when they are being warmed up, again on toast. Beans on toast or cheesybeans on toast on doorsteps is equally as yummy!

  14. SWGardener

Oh this is my high school favorite. Beans on toast with a slice of cheese on top, then put in a toaster over. So yummy. I am a yank too and it is such a treat when I have it.

  15. Travels_Belly

If you can get hold of them try branston beans. Hinz used to be the best but over the years they’ve really let things slip. Now? They are really not that good. Many, most, brands are now much better.

As for the beans on toast, top job! I do think traditionally the cheese would go on top of the beans but you do you! Spiffing job old bean.

  16. AlGunner

    Worster?

Bloody heathen. Its Worcestershire sauce. (pronounced wu stur sher)

  17. LiquoricePigTrotters

Good effort, however as a Brit I will point out you need real British Cheddar and Lea and Perrins Worcestershire sauce. Also I can’t make it out but you have got a builders brew there haven’t you? Other than that you’re good as gold son.

  18. wildOldcheesecake

    ONE OF US!

As mentioned, you can tweak the beans and explore other options like adding chilli flakes. I like to be a bit poncey and will sometimes add fish sauce, miso paste or leftover curry gravy. And of course, reduce on the hob and finish with the sharpest English cheddar you can find

  19. jaBroniest

Is that wrocestertershirer sauce too? My god, welcome to blighty sir.

  20. hallerz87

I’m going to assume the bean can is for show and you didn’t just empty a cold can of beans onto your toast!

  21. GabberZZ

Fuck me if the yank hasn’t put more effort into their beans on toast that a lot of us Brits can be arsed to do!

    Good work!

… Have you ever tried curried beans? Bit of curry powder stirred into a tin of beans works wonders…

  22. blabla857

You should team up with u/darkrealm190 and create a dedicated sub for yanks trying beans on toast

  23. hahsatan72

This looks really good and I really like your table cloth !

  24. Unusual-Somewhere822

That looks amazing OP, well done and hope you and your wife enjoyed it. p.s love your monkey mug 👏👏

This is a very good effort.
Im not going to go over the other stuff about the L&P and the cheese. These are good quality comments based upon personal taste and availability – but a fab attempt.

I don’t do L&P or cheese on mine, but that is also me,

I cant stand tea, so mine is normally washed down with some nitrous-grade espresso-type coffee.

I don’t know if this is a popular opinion, but I like to add a poached/soft-fried egg to mine .. it generates so much beautiful goo that another slice of toast or fresh bread is used to mop it up.

Just thinking about it is making me salivate

and another poster was spot on .. the table cloth is pretty smart!!
A timely part of the year too

Beans on toast is a national treasure not because it’s particularly good – although it is fine.

It’s popular because it’s very cheap, very quick, very easy and reasonably healthy. This means that parents don’t mind giving it to their kids as a lunch or rushed dinner.

Because we all ate it regularly as kids it’s a cheap, easy, quick & healthy comfort food.

  27. Rachel94Rachel

If you can get hold of Branston beans then I’d give them a go, they are far superior to Heinz!

  28. Dear_Tangerine444

    > “It’s good.” […] So she followed up with “Its very good.”

Excellent understatement, I think your wife understood the assignment perfectly.

  29. Ok-Fox1262

See, there’s hope for civilising the colonials yet. 😁

  30. Cristo_Cannes

Cook your beans in a pot, teaspoon of butter, medium heat & continuously stir for 10-15 mins. It really elevates them.

  31. Cybermanc

Where in the States are you?

I’ve already corrupted my friends in Ohio and Florida and want to see how many States can be conquered by beans on toast.

  32. Exciting-Music843

Probably had all the comments on beans on toast already but …. I’m not a fan of cheese in my beans and prefer HP or Daddies brown sauce. I also like to leave my beans heating in a pan for considerably longer than it takes to heat them as the sauce thickens as the beans start to break up a little.

  33. Feeling_Novel_9899

Another favourite is bacon and beans on toast. Butter the toast well, add crispy bacon and top with beans. Oh and I love your monkey mug, I am going to have to get one. 😎
