Made my first loaf of bread tonight. I'm home on Paternity Leave, and me and my wife were looking for activities to do in between taking care of the newborn. So we did the most cliche nesting activity and made bread. But first I bought a stand mixer, loaf pans, and ingredients. The end result was the best BLT I have ever had. With thick slab smoked bacon. Hence: $300 bread. Also taking submissions for other breads or stamd mixer recipes. Tommorow we try cinnamon swirl..

That means every loaf you make is free until you need more ingredients

You may wish to investigate sourdough, and cooking in a Dutch oven. There are many recipes for no knead bread and some good books.( can recommend them if you are a book person, I am) You may also want to consider making you own pizza dough as well. If you really want to get into it, grind you own grain with a mill. (note that is not really quite and you don’t want to wake the baby)

Once you make your sandwich with Japanese milk bread you’ll wonder how you could ever go back

King Arthur website has a great recipe

It looks amazingg! The first bread I ever made (buns) were a bit hard and not very well risen. During the covid years, like most everyone I kind of got good at making really good tasty buns, but no loaves ever came out well.

I finally discovered cold fermentation this year and damnn the few loaves I made are so tasty and are way less labour intensive than buns (and other small shapes). Hoping to start making all wheat bread in some time.

Made my first big batch of home made pizza from Kenji- Alt- Lopez’s recipe and it was unbelievably soft and fluffy. Best pizza in a long time

All the very best on your bread making journey !

Ah, you are using the woodworker’s method, I see. See what piece of equipment you “need” for each project. That is an excellent $300 loadf of bread.

Any sort of brioche/enriched dough like brioche buns, challah, maritozzi, babka is fun with a stand mixer, they’re much harder to do by hand. Still a little more advanced so on a day you’re feeling up to a bit more challenge, but not too hard you really risk a ruined/inedible end product

Once u make ur own starter you’ll literally never need to buy anything except flour and salt. It pays for itself

I really like adding orange zest to the bread dough of my cinnamon swirl bread.

I’m so happy for you and your future bread activities. Also congratulations on your new addition! (The baby primarily, but also the KitchenAid.)
