    True story:

I met this woman, we went on a date which was awful (she basically criticized me the entire time), she was very adversarial. At the end of the date, she asks me, “So do I get to see you again?” To which I said, “Hell no, you spent the entire date picking at me. I wish you luck in dating!”

Fast-forward 6-months. I got an e-mail from her saying, “Hey, I know things didn’t work out but, I know you have a Disneyland pass, I just got one, would be interested in going as friends?”

So we’re at Disneyland, she mentions she’s hungry, and why don’t we go to the Pizza Port? When she gets in there, and this was all new information to me since I’d only met this person once before, she walks up to the counter and says, “Hi, I’m so-and-so, and I’m lactose intolerant and gluten intolerant. Is there anything I can eat here?”

To Disney’s extreme credit, the guy replies, “I am the manager and I will personally make you a gluten-free, soy-cheese pepperoni pizza.”

Without missing a beat, she says. “…aaaaannnnnndddd I’m Jewish.” (she can’t have the pepperoni).

I looked at her just flabbergasted and said, “Why did you suggest the Pizza Port when you’re allergic to all the ingredients of Pizza?”

She just shrugged. Very weird person. In retrospect, it was hilarious. But I didn’t want to hang out with Larry David.

I once chewed out a fellow cook in front of the whole kitchen because he spilled a quart of chopped nuts into the salad greens and didn’t tell anyone or fix the issue. Just left it for me to find when I took over the station from him.

I mean, I get that dietary restrictions are annoying, but people could literally die. Have you ever seen someone go into anaphylactic shock? Most terrifying thing I’ve ever seen.

Recently had someone with an allergy list of gluten, dairy, tomato, bell pepper, nuts, several types of fruit, and was a vegetarian. (not vegan, but still) Also had to be a dish containing as little salt as possible.

Eventually we settled on a vegetarian salad with olive oil as dressing, but goddamn…I felt bad for their taste buds.

How many people actually have all the allergies they claim to have because in my experience most people with allergies are very middle class. I’m sure somewhere there are statistics on this.

Jeez in 2024 if you can’t whip something up like that for a customer just quit while you’re ahead.

If the guest will call in advance and give me some warning, i will fix you a delightful dinner. If the guest mentions this after eating the cheese, sausage and bread soup, I am rubbing your plate with raw bacon

  11. Eh? That leaves a ton of veggies, proteins, starches and sauces. They should have at least put some soy/oat/coconut/ legume allergies if they were trying to meme. Herbed roast potatoes, rice, fries, mushrooms, Brussel sprouts, vinaigrette salad, chili, curry, vegetable soup etc. Tons of options.

I work at what is essentially a bakery. Bread and sandwiches are like 80% of what we have, and almost everything else has gluten in it somehow (whether its certain ingredients having flour like breaded chicken or soups that are thickened with a roux, etc).

The number of people who come in and say they’re allergic–not intolerant, not gluten free for diet reason, allergic–to gluten is crazy to me. I understand that people with allergies should have somewhere where they can eat out safely, that is affordable and actually tastes good. But, I don’t know, I think if you’re allergic to break, skip somewhere what specializes in bread.

There is such a huge chance for even the smallest cross contamination, even if we follow allergy procedures to a T, the fact is there will be flour and bread crumbs everywhere. If a gluten allergy is strong enough, just being around bread can cause problems.

I can think of several places that would be a much better choice for people with gluten allergies within 5 minutes, that are the same price or cheaper than we are, and yet, we get 5-10 every day.

It makes no sense to me.

    ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Met an office manager once who described a catering situation to me.

He was planning an office lunch and talked to a nearby cafe to organise some sandwiches and platters. The night before the lunch he realised he forgot about Donna’s gluten allergy. In a bit of a panic he drives to the supermarket and grabs a bunch of gluten free stuff so that she doesn’t get left out. Back at home he makes some gluten free sandwiches for her and a platter of some kind for the next day.

During the catered lunch he sees Donna munch on a normal sandwich and quickly runs up to her to tell her mistake and point the safe food out to her. Donna looks at him with a little smile and says ‘I just say I’m gluten free because then they provide more options.’

I’m usually just a lurker here, but I just got resigned to the AIP diet (no gluten, dairy, eggs, nightshades, and more). I am doing my best at home, but def want to eat out once in a while. I do my best to make it as easy as possible for waiters and look at the menu in advance, but those of us with dietary restrictions really want to eat out sometimes too 🙂 it’s a little self care thing. Something that really helps is having menus that say what is in the dish, like little symbols for gluten/dairy/etc. and clearly laid out components (like “salad with peppers, capers, balsamic dressing”). It’s def a two way street.

  15. To the allergic people if there is any, even if it’s so annoying, let us know these restrictions even if your meal doesn’t contain said thing if you are really severely allergic. Saw a guy almost die when his meal was cut by a knife from onions.
First and last time I’ve seen somebody allergic to fucking onion

  16. Vegan also covers dairy, so that didn’t need to be mentioned.

I run multi-units. I now have six food allergies or sensitivities. I don’t eat out and i don’t even eat at my own units. If i can’t trust to not get accidentally poisoned by my own staff you think I’m gonna eat at a rando restaurant?
