Stopped by Leroy and Lewis on Saturday morning after realizing it is in our zip code. Of we do a BBQ Saturday we’re usually at Moreno’s for their smoked carne guisada and smoked barbacoa. I digress, let’s talk L&L.

  • Brisket: Really great bark to it, tender, juicy. I opt for lean cuts on brisket and it still passed the juice-squeeze test. I enjoyed that it was a no-frills type of brisket; how good it is relies on its simplicity and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
  • Bacon glazed Beef Rib: When in Rome…
I’ll preface this with saying I am not a “bacon person” – just not something we grew up eating much of in my home. However, the beef rib was BY FAR my favorite meat we tried that day. Tender, juicy, and the glaze was flavorful without overwhelming the integrity of the smoke-cook of the rib. Just a really well balanced, divine piece of meat.
  • Chorizo Sausage Link: Out of all the meats this is one I wouldn’t order again. It was surprisingly dry, and seemed like it was trying a bit too hard. I wanted more adobo, more flavor out of it.
  • Chori-Papas: These were HEAVY but chorizo con papas is a go-to comfort food and I appreciated these. The side portions were large so we packed those up, reheated them in the cast iron on Sunday with fried eggs and Salsa Macha. Great great leftovers and I love that they reheated so well!
  • Kale Caesar Slaw: really loved the lightness and the creaminess of this slaw.
  • Corn Bread: Please order this. It reminded me quite a bit of Pan de Elote Jalisciense. Had great structure but melted in your mouth. Loved the butternut squash butter and roasted pepita seeds on it. When I was little – we would top our pan de elote with dulce de leche if we wanted something more “desserty”; this one hit me right in the nostalgia.

Overall: Definitely would recommend! We didn’t wait in line too long (30 minutes?) but got there around 10:35am before doors opened. Enjoyed the new spin on traditional sides – and it was evident the staff enjoyed hyping up their dishes. Service, food, experience reminded me of Kin Khao in San Francisco, a fellow one star Michelin recipient. Just great food, non-pretentious, good people.
