Did I take it to far? Dunno.
I private messaged her that I wouldn't be able to come in at 2am. It's "our responsibility" to get someone else to come in for us but there are only a handful of people who will pick up shifts- myself being one of them.
I picked up 4 extra shifts in the last 2 weeks and I'm also a full time college student, with a second job.
I've started applying to new jobs so, we'll see how that goes.

If you’re ill, you’re ill. Send them a pic of the vomit next time if they don’t trust you enough

What’s the name of this company?
Depending on state, they also can’t legally require a doctor’s note from you. I ran into this in California and got really acquainted with the labor laws in the state lol
Oh hey my boss just told me last week to “tough it up we all come in sick” when my stomach couldn’t hold anything for days and I couldn’t even walk up stairs. He was off for a football game that day mind you. Also searching for a new job! Not a barista but I can relate there.
What sort of capitalist corporate bullshit is this?! Doctor’s notes for work is an invasion of privacy and not needed. Just controlling shit!
I hate when owners/managers ask for doctors notes and make staff get their own coverage. Employees aren’t children. I ask my staff if they can try to get coverage if they’re sick but it’s never a ‘this is your responsibility’ only a ‘if you can that would be helpful and I’d be grateful’, and when ppl call in sick my response is ‘okay feel better’ not ‘get a doctors note and you should’ve really shown up anyways’.
unfortunately extremely common in coffee shops, many times iv had to resort to throwing up AT work, or checking out customers while being visibly extremely sick to get the point across
finding coverage is not on you it’s on the person making salary
Aside from likely not needing a doctors note, it’s ridiculous that you’re expected to find your own coverage when sick. That’s the point of having a manager.
good for you!
I hate when they try to guilt trip you or use that passive aggressive bs. like you chose to be the manager/boss, so stop complaining 🙄 most forget that even if you’re a boss/owner/whatever, you’re still an employee. the number 1 employee even! or hire an assistant manager I guess. but expecting baristas to go above and beyond… sure, pay me appropriately lol
The passive aggressive group texts were the #1 reason I left my last barista job without notice.
Where do you live? Because depending on where it may be illegal for them to require you to find coverage. It may also be illegal for them to require a doctor’s note. Again, depends on which country/state you’re in.
Crazy, no coverage but 35 others in the chat. 🤣
I feel like shitty businesses love using Homebase 😭
Since boss lady here wants to talk about responsibility, it’s her own responsibility to hire enough people with open availability and appropriately staff overlaps in shifts. Sounds like she needs to get her shit together. I also love when they call you out in a group message underhandedly but then when you respond they say “we’ll discuss later” 😂😂 she’s a clown
You should be getting paid for reading and responding to work related texts. If you took this to the labor board, you would in fact be paid one minute per text. I know this because the company I work for just dealt with a huge lawsuit over it and they lost. The only people allowed work related texts messages are salaried associates.
I showed up once because of a passive aggressive text about a dr note. They were FLOORED and immediately sent me home asking why I showed up if i was so sick…. I looked at them dead in the face and said, you don’t pay me enough to afford an urgent care bill for you to believe that I’m actually too sick to work. I don’t work there anymore cause fuck them. I quit shortly after.
as a manager i get how rough cold and flu season is in little coffee shops. she just wants a doctors note because so many people do lie to get out of work. i think your message had so much attitude because you aren’t feeling good so i wouldn’t overthink it too much. however i dont think your manager is out of line either. she just reiterated the policy.
Shitty manager. Never let an employee feel bad or cornered because they are sick.. they should replace the manager ASAP. It’s also a managers duty to ask others for coverage on shifts, that just seems lazy if they’re asking employees to do that.
People are so much better than me because I would show up and immediately just vom on the floor in front of all the customers and employees.
IF THEY DON’T PROVIDE INSURANCE, IM NOT SUPPLYING A DOCTOR’S NOTE.
I’d come in and start throwing up in front of customers. Bet they won’t be petty then 🤷🏼♀️
