Charcoal and hickory in the smokey joe kettle. Dryer vent tube to direct the smoke into the gas grill. I first did this about 20yrs ago.

Good idea, but next time try it without soaking the chips. You want a clean burn/smoke, not steamy slow/dirty burning wood.

You McGuyvered theis on the fly – good job! After trying this method once, I actually built a tall smoking box and use my weber grill inside, at the base as the smoke generator. Hot or cold – works great!
