modifications:
– halved the recipe and baked in a 6-inch cake pan.
– replaced a splash of the boiling water with dark rum and vanilla extract when soaking the dates. added in a pinch of salt, too.
-replaced about 30g of AP flour with whole wheat.
-added an almost unrecognizable amount of orange zest.
– browned the butter in the sauce.

– used heavy cream instead of half and half.
-slightly under churned the custard to keep it smooth and slightly soft.
-toasted some pecans in the oven and added in after churning.
