This is a meal I make for myself all the time, but not sure how to classify it, or what to call it. I called it poke, and that upset people, so just wondering what other people call it. Rice, lettuce, green peppers, red onions, sprouts, jalapenos, avocado, ginger, sesame seeds, siracha mayo, nori.

Call it a poke bowl. Most people don’t have problems with bowls.

From the perspective of Japanese sensibilities, it is natural to call something “sushi” as long as it uses vinegared rice, regardless of its appearance. However, if it does not use vinegared rice, it is not considered sushi, even if it is topped with raw fish or anything else.

I would kill a man for this right now. At first I thought it was a tuna bibimbap due to the bean sprouts (which I’ve never seen in Japanese restaurants), but all of the other ingredients scream poke to me. A cursory google search says bean sprouts aren’t weird in poke either, I guess I just haven’t seen a lot of poke lol

At Mama Kwan’s, a Pacific Rim-themed restaurant in Kill Devil Hills, NC, something very similar to this dish is called Garbage Plate Add Tuna. It’s one of their most popular entrees and has been for years-

It looks like a tasty fusion rice bowl but it’s neither sushi or poke. Poke in Hawaii does not have vegetables.

Not Poke. There is no poke in that bowl. It’s a salad that contains raw fish served over rice. Looks delicious.
