I wish Portuguese Baga was easier to find on the American market! Snagged this 1996 Bairrada though from a local distributor for $60. To me it typically tastes like a cross between Nebbiolo and Xinomavro…which is why it’s one of my favorites.
This 90% Baga shows the amazing longevity of this varietal! Aged garnet color with dark red fruit then weak earth on the nose. On the palate getting cranberry, pomegranate, light cherry, lager, crushed leaves, cigar box, graphite, potpourri, and maybe lavender too. Really complex but very distinct fruit that then turns floral and finishes earthy. Medium plus acidity shines but the medium tannins are very structured and foundational. Great balance! Amazing with 28 years of age…opens up nicely over an hour or two! 92 points

Baga is one of the great varieties of the world! Look for older Luis Pato, it’s pretty available in the US.
Love Baga. Next to nothing where I am too and it’s a damn shame.
Currently serving this as our Coravin BTG option at the restaurant I’m at! Bairrada and most of Portugal really is a last bastion of quality-to-price ratio gold
Second Luis Pato for further study. Benchmark producer.
Also Luis Pato does a lovely tasting on his vineyards, a highlight of many we did all over Portugal.
Did I sell this to you in Manhattan today?
